OMG! Those DUMB cigarettes...UGH! Hi all, Im going crazy over here. I am on my 8th day of not smoking. Im taking the commit lozenges and they really do help with cravings. If I was not on these babies I would have caved already! The 5th day was oddly easy, yesterday was horrid......I wanted a cigarette from the morning until I went to bed........ONEEEEEE LONGGGGGGG CONSTANT CRAVING!! But I got thru it, and today is a new day. Do you all have any quit smoking stories? Successful or not? They dont have to be your own either, maybe a family member. Im very dedicated to stop smoking but this will be hardest thing I have ever done. Hope the intense cravings slack off, its pretty awful. I already feel physically better but those cigs sure do get ahold of ya. I guess I cant expect 23 yrs of addiction go "POOF" and be gone. |
WOW! You've got a lot of will power! I've tried to quit several times and before the day was over with, my husband would go out and buy me a new pack. |
i have tried but didnt work....my husband said i need to try april 1st....i told him ok but i think it may just be an april fool joke. it is sooo very hard to quit. i feel for you. i have the patches. i used the patch about 5 yrs ago and i quit for about 3 months but then went out w the girls and started back. good luck to you |
I quit after about 4 years....nothing compared to your 23. Best I can remember, it was only bad for the first 2-3 weeks...and I went cold turkey with it. During that time I found I only really craved when I was driving by myself, or extremely bored, so I would find something enjoyable to constantly occupy myself. I still get the urge every once in a blue moon when I am extremely upset/mad or when (about once a year) I get a few in me. I'll smoke one, but at this point, it is so nasty to me that it literally makes me sick and kills the urge. Also, when the craving came up, I would start listing off the negative aspects (it can kill you, think of what the family would have to go through, it smells, cost alot of money, etc) vs the pros (because I like it). Really seemed selfish and silly to me. You can do it! Just hang in there and be tough! You'll be so glad you did it! :) |
We had two guys from work that got hypotized and it worked for them, im going to try it one of these days, i hope it works for me |
Good luck, and good job trying, I know how hard it is, I tried it and it didn't last one day,, I guess I didn't want it bad enough... yet. We all need to quit, but it is SOOOO hard. I heard once that the addiction is comparable to being addicted to heroin.. That is frightening. |
You are attempting the hardest thing you will ever do! But YOU CAN DO IT! My son who was about 12 at the time asked me why I smoked. I told him I liked it. He said "don't you know it will kill you"...so he asked me to quit and I did...Cold Turkey, no patches no nothing. It was murder. I had smoked for 15 years and was up to almost two packs a day. I could not get out of bed in the morning til I had a cigarette. So about three months later, I was out of town with a gal friend of mine who smoked and I bummed one...it was not that great. About 3 months after that, I smoked another one and got sick as a dog...never touched another one, but I craved them for a good 5 years. There are times today that I could pick one up and smoke it but I don't. The smell of them in someones house or to pass by someone smoking makes me kind of queasy...but I love the smell of one when it is first lit up...does that make sense??? Oh and the little boy who asked me to quit is now 23....and smoking! I am so mad at him. Good luck...just keep reminding yourself that this is something you really want to do...that you need to do...do it for yourself and you will be glad you did! Keep us posted on your progress. |
My boyfriend quit after ten years+ of smoking. He started very young, and he has trie to quit a few times but started again, just because it made him feel more "in" with his friends, but now it has been over 5 months. He quit cold turkey and doesn't care for them at all anymore. You can do it!! |

Good Luck! |
Wow! I know how you feel. I have quite smoking twice cold turkey! I didn't have any gum or anything to help. You have the power to overcome them! Good luck! Just remember that it will get easier as the days go by! And then your whole body will start to feel better! |
good luck to you! Its hard i know.... my grandmother quit cold turkey the day they told her she had lung cancer and 6m to live because of cigarettes.... and i dont smoke anymore since my lung collapsed at age 25.... a friend quit gradually when at age 20 she started coughing up blood from cigarettes.... all these stories are true if that helps... smoking is relaxing this i know but you are better off w/out it if you can ... good luck to you i know its easier to quit in my state you can't be w/in 50ft of a building if you are smoking - and you can't smoke in clubs or bars either |
I quit 7 weeks ago, I did the patch and was so successful on it that I stopped using the patch early... then something BIG happened and I was stressed out and I smoked on Friday. I have smoked one cigarette a day since then, at night, on the back porch, in the dark after everyone has gone to bed... I'm sneaky... I heard that if you wear the patch AND smoke for the first two weeks that you are on it then your success rate for quitting will be alot higher. You get so much nicotine from the patch that smoking just makes you sick... I'm going back on the patch, step 3, so that I can stop my now 1-a-day habit! |
Good for you! I know that things will get better! I wish so bad that I could quit smoking but its not working for me either! About the hypnotizing my cousin and her hubby did that a year ago and as soon as they left the place they were fine but the very next day they were both smoking again. So I guess for some people it works and for some others it doesnt! Good luck I know you can do it! |
I think I have one of the most wonderful husbands in the world. He quit gosh going on 20 years ago for me. My allergies had gotten so bad that I couldn't be around him. First he started going outside and then just smoking in the car on the way home from work. But, it didn't work I would immediately get sick, I think alot of it was from living with a smoker my dad for 19 years I developed asthma when I was younger so between that and my allergies he quit. Of course now and I most definitely wouldn't recommend this but he dipped in place of the cigarettes and he still does it to this day. I've been on him really hard because I'm afraid he is going to end up getting mouth cancer. Plus I don't want our 9 year old son to pick up the habit. Good Luck and keep up the good work. You can do it. Just think about how much better you will feel once you get over all the cravings. |
Keep Up The Good Work! I have not yet set another quit date. :thumbdown |
I am HAPpy for you ,And you deserve to be free of that monkey on your back" and no one can do it but you so give yourself the praise and GOOd Luck! |
Hi all, Thank you so much for your input and the " You can do its!" I love the support with stories and suggestions. Tonight is better, Im eerily calm again, so happy Im not smoking but still craving a burst of nicotine off and on, a cigarette was the beginning and the end to almost every task I did. Driving, loading the dish washer, unloading the dishwasher, putting the kids down for a nap, getting the kids up from a nap, thinking about folding the laundry, finishing folding the laundry, thinking about starting dinner, finishing fixing dinner............just a few examples.......I smoked for all occasions if allowed.....then it lost its so called good effect so I smoked not only before a task and after but DURING the task too! I never did feel better........would you beleive I started to feel worse?!!.......Sometimes I couldnt enjoy an outing that didnt allow smoking because it took to long and since you cant smoke everywhere anymore, alot of times I couldnt wait to get out and smoke so whatever I was doing no matter how much fun it was to me I didnt enjoy it at the end because I wanted a cigarette. THat is all I wanted , a cigarette to give me a blast of nicotine to calm the craving. That is the power of addiction. For some reason it helps me to talk about "the monkey on my back" Guess Im trying to talk him down! He sure is stubborn! But Im beating his hairy butt right now! Ill beat it  again tomorrow too! :teethysmi Damn Monkey. |
My brother in law who smoked for many years quit by using some type of stop smoking thing and it came in a bottle and when you got the craving you smelled it. I can't remember what he said it was but it worked for him. He stopped after smoking for about 20 some years. He said everyonce in a while he would crave cigs but never picked them back up. |
I am going to try to stop smoking on Monday. I am going to get the commit lozenges and I have patches. Wish me luck I need it. |

Chachi, Good for you and Good luck and good will power!!!!! If You need a quit buddy for support and sharing I would be glad to try to help. I bought the lozenges a week or so before my quit date, I asked my husband to smoke outside and he agreed and does so, I also cleaned my car out especially my ashtray, got rid of my lighters and made sure no cigarettes were in my house and no ashtrays. Hubby doesnt bring his in anymore. I hope he quits one day but right now he is being respectful of me and if he choses to quit thats great. But right now I just worry about my quitting. If you use the lozenges, they really do curve cravings but do use the minimal amount just as they say NO LESS, ................from experience if you do use less on one day, the next day sucks because the cravings are worse. Its all about a constant low dose of nicotine especially the first weeks and if you dont use the therapy as recommended, it doesnt work as well. Yesterday I used half the dose because I felt really good and didnt want a cigarette but I woke up the next morning craving a cigarette really bad and it lasted most of the day. If you take it as recommnded it really does give you the power to not indulge, and realize you feel better without a puff. Sending you " A big wish of success, you can do it!" |
You can do it! I've set my quit date for April 1. I know I have to do it. I'm 45 and have been smoking for more than half of my life. I've quit before, but only for 4 months and I started again when my father-in-law passed away. But this time I'm just resigned that it's what I have to do if I want to be healthier and live longer. I have M.S. and I'm sure the smoking doesn't help. The only thing is that when my pain is high, I smoke 'cause it's something to do to take my mind off of the pain. I'll have to find something else to do, I guess (something other than eat!) :) I wish you all the best. If you can survive those first big craving days, you're doing amazing....just think....each day will get easier! |
Chachi and Kelly...YOU BOTH CAN DO THIS!!!! We are all rooting for you... Go Chachi! :yay_jump: Go Kelly! :yay_jump: Stop Smoking! Not Joking! How is that for a cheer! :clapsmile |
