Traditional Saint Patricks day dinner
 
:) i am a jewish gal & want to make a traditional corned beef dinner for friday. any personal recipes would be much appreciated! :animal36

there is one thing you need to about us Irish....we boil the crap out of everything! You just cut up cabbage and throw it in a big pot of water, along with peeled, cut up potatoes and the corned beef. When the cabbage and potatoes are soft you drain most of the water off....and there it is! At least that is how my mom and grandma made it. They didn't actuallly use corned beef, they used ham, because neither one of them liked corned beef. Don't forget the green beer!

That is actually TRUE IRISH. I have friends who are from Ireland. There is NO such thing as corned beef in Ireland. He said the traditional dish is made with ham. The corned beef comes from when the Irish immigrated and where mostly in the Jewish neighborhood of Brooklyn. Of course they could not get ham and the closest thing the Jewish butcher had was corned beef.

By the way the church is actually granting dispensation on Friday so that you can eat meat. You are suppose to do something charitable in its place.

Oh wow! Thanks for that info! My mom always said they just didn't like corned beef, I'll bet she didn't even realize that's why her mom made it with ham. Tastes much better too!

Our friends always made fun of us for cooking corned beef on St Paddy's day. Then I asked him why and that's when I got the history of Corned Beef. ;)
