Back pain relief? I have had such a backache for days now and I was wondering if anyone knows of any over the counter medicine that would help? I don't want to go to the Dr. because he'd probably want to give me a muscle relaxer. That's the last thing I need with two small kids! Look at how stoned Mommy is! I'm going to try a heating pad this afternoon and see if that works a little. Any tips or advice? Thanks! |

Advil doesn't work for me either...if you go to the store you may want to get some Aleve, i.e Naproxen Sodium...I always get the store brand. |

I'm currently home on disability for neck problems, so I've been to a lot of doctors lately... First of all my orthopedist suggests moist heat. Wet towel in a plastic bag covered with a heating pad. 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Aleve is also recommended. If it's degenerative disc disease the chiropractor will do more harm than good. Every one over 40 has DDD to some degree, and if you've had any kind of injuries it could be more developed than most. My husband and I both have it. He had to have spinal fusion surgery on his lower back when he was in his mid 30s because of sports injuries. I had a bad fall last year and after the surgeries and all the broken bones were healed I thought I was okay. Then in November, I ruptured a disc in my neck. Evidently my fall had damaged the bones in my neck and now they are degenerated more than they should be for my age (46) and aren't as supportive as they should be, either. If you've been having problems so long, you might want to get it checked. An x-ray will show them right away if there are degenerative disc problems. Also supplements seem to help. PM me if you want to know more... Sucks, huh! Hope you feel better. |

Advil didn't work for me. Can someone go get some Aleve for you? I really think it would help. I have a very bad back, they gave me pain meds, but I don't like to take them because you can't drive with them, and my children come first. I found Aleve works best for me, I don't even wear my brace as much anymore. :) Hope you feel better soon! |

Thanks Sherry! I'm thinking maybe I should get it checked soon I'm just a big baby and put it off because I don't want to hear bad news which is so stupid! I really feel there's something more wrong than just throwing out my back now and then. I mean this time I don't remember doing anything that would warrant this pain. So if I go to a Dr. I should go to an orthopedist? |

Sherry when you get a chance could you PM me the name of the Dr.? Thanks! |
My back pain is caused by stress (huge boobs) and I hold tension in my back. I go to a massage therapist once a week for a half hour and that really helps. |
I would recommend you first see an orthopedic physician that specializes in non-surgical treatments. Too often, back pain is made worse by surgery - don't get me wrong, surgery is sometimes the only solution - but sometimes it is not and can make the problem worse. If you see a doc who specializes in surgery - well, then they are most likely to recommend it first before trying other things. If you don't get relief from a doc who does not specialize in surgery - then you can always go the surgery route later. I've seen tooooo many failed back surgeries. My husband had wonderful results for a bad lower back and a bad shoulder with non-surgical treatments - not chiropractic - but an MD who used physical therapy and other treatments. Just my two cents worth. |
Checking to see if you're feeling better. Hope so, Take care!!! |
Wow I feel for you. I'm going through my second bad bout of back pain in two years. Work has bought me a Herman Miller Aeron chair (http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/...440-p8,00.html) and it has helped a lot. Before the chair I could hardly walk by 5 pm. For now I use a muscle relaxant during the day with Codeine and at night Percocet. I'm not happy about it but this bout is getting better and I'm hoping to be without the heavy pain meds in less than a week. I have a job where I just can't leave as I am the lead on one huge project and 2nd on another very large project. Sooo.... I feel your pain and I understand. I'm not that old and I'm dealing with this and to be honest I'm very worried. Living with the pain during the day and pain killers at night is no life. Once I get over this bout I will be looking at Chiro and Physio and hope that I find solace in one or the other. Good luck to you :) |
Well after using the new chair for less than a week all I can say is wow. I'm no longer a completely wreck by the end of the day! All I'm taking for pain management tonight is the muscle relaxant. My yorkies happy to, means daddy gets to play with her :) |
