Regular prescription meds VS Extended Release? (re:ADHD meds) whats your thoughts on this? Both boys have been on an extended release ADHD medication for a few months. My oldest on a much lower dose, only needed for concentration in school. Well I picked the prescriptions up at the drs today and went to Target. Got them filled, bought alot of other stuff (can't help it there!) Wrote my check and was on my way. Started thinking about the total on the way home and when I got home (30 mins away) i relized they didn't write my oldests for extended release, just regular....it was cheaper (by alot!) but i wonder if it will affect him differently. He does't need his for behaviour like the younger one does, mainly for concentration on his school work. So I wont really notice the differnece in him. Im going to talk to his teacher in the am and ask her to take note of his behaviour over the next week or so and see if its a big difference. Anyone have any insight on this? |
My son has been treated for ADHD for 12 years. He's been on both kinds. The only difference with the regular is that he will need to take it twice. With Kevin, it was just a matter of him not wanting to go to the nurse at lunch time for the pill. You will need a a note from the Dr. for the nurse to administer the second dose. Some kids have a problem with peaks and valleys with the regular. It takes 30 minutes to work, works for a couple of hours and then stops working and they need the next dose, same cycle again. The pharmacy should not have given you the regular if the Dr. wrote for the extended release. |

first the dr didn't write the extended release, they messed up and I dind't catch it till I was home. Second, he only takes it once...says once in the morning. He only needs it realy between the hours of 830-130, so im thinking one may be enough. I guess I 'll just have to have the teacher let me know how it affects him. |
Oh, then that makes sense to only give him the regular. If he doesn't need it past 1:30 the extended release may be over medicating him. Hope it all works out! |
extended vs. regular when I used to take the regular I would peak then crash. With extended release I always felt better and wouldn't crash. I prefer the extended release and always advise others for the extended release. Just my opinion since I have taken ADHD meds for 24 years. |
As someone who has been on ADHD meds for 18 years I personally recommend extended release. This is from my experience and this is what I take. :) |
