How to clean diamonds

Hello,
I haven't cleaned my diamond since my then fiance, now husband gave it to me(4 1/2 years ago) I don't want to take it to a jewelry store because althought they cleaned them in front of you, I've heard scary stories. I don't have a jeweler I can trust, because I don't know one. Does anybody know a way to clean a diamond at home? Is there a product sold at stores that someone can recommend?
Thanks in advance
Venus :) :)

My mom used to clean her diamond with toothpaste. :) I clean mine with Jewelry cleaner.

I use toothpaste and a toothbrush on all my rings, and even gold and silver necklaces they sparkle like new.

I use amonia and a toothbrush. I soak them for about 1/2 and then use a soft baby toothbrush.

I use a toothbrush and a mild liquid soap. Just scrub the diamond (gently) front and back and along the band. My diamonds (all of them!) sparkle like new. I do this once a month or so.

Marking Diamonds Shine

Per Good Housekeeping Magazine (its on my desk), Harry Winstow (the FAMOUS Jewler) mixes 2 parts hot tap water and one part amonia. Soak diamonds (only good for diamonds as mixture may hurt other jewels) for several minutes. While submerged, scrub with soft makeup brush or baby's toothbrush. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Repeat monthly or as needed.

Yes, at 24 I have a subscription and I LOVE Good Housekeeping. They have THEE BEST tips!!! :D

Tell your hubby that there is nothing that will clean them so you are going to need some new diamonds  LOL! If that doesnt work then I just use toothpaste to clean mine!

I have always soaked mine in washing up liquid for about half an hour then give gentle scrub with toothbrush, they come up gleaming.
My hubby bought one of my diamond rings from a lady who sold jewllery at antique fairs and she said thats how she cleaned all hers.

Some stores you can take them in to be steam cleaned right in front of you...Service Merchandise used to do that...

I use amonia and a soft toothbrush for mine.

You guys! I am a Manager for The Shane Company, Direct Diamond Importers.

No toothpaste! It may have been ok for your mom or grandmother... cause toothpaste was a basic paste way back when. But these days it contains so many whiteners and abrasives, you really don't want it on your metal. it won't harm your diamond one bit but will do damage to some softer gemstones.

The best at home cleaning is windex and a toothbrush. Some of you were right on! What really dulls your diamond is the finger prints and lotion and other goop your diamond comes into contact with on a daily basis. Windex will cut through all of that and leave a streak free shine! lol.

If you Heat it up all the better. Not Boiling. Just a tad past warm, like a really hot bath. and let it sit untill the windex cools. then brish it reall good with a med tooth brush. run under water and it will sparkle like there is no tomorow!

If you really want the bet clean ever get into a jewelry store and let them put in the ultrasonic. it vibrates even the tiniest particals out from uner the diamond and gives a deep cleaning where your brush can never reach!

If you have a Shane Co near you.... then go there! You can trust us with anything! I just gave my notice and will be leaving Shane Co, as I am moving 600 miles away. But you better beleive that every six months I will Fed-ex my 2.23 ct diamond, along with all of my other jewelry, to them so they can servive my items. With plenty of insurance! I have no problem sending them my things. This company is as honest as they come!

Its true that the jewelry business has its fair share of bad apples. Its sad, but true. But there are still some honest people out there. If you have a Shane Co near you, I urge you to check them out! The clean and check is FREE! Even if it was not purchaced at our store! You'll be made to feel very welcomed!

If you don't have one near by, sorry.... Break out the windex!

I bought a jewelry cleaner at sears.. It is a little jar of stinky pink ammonia stuff with a little tray to catch the rings in and a little soft brush to clean them with. It keeps mine sparkling.. I have two friends who are jewelers and they dont yell at me for doing this, so I'm assuming it's okay...

I guess I will be breaking out the windex 'cause ther is no Shane co in Texas. :p :D

Kathryn_V 03-07-2006 10:11 AM

Texas is on the table as one of the states to build in next. I was willing to transfer to Texas or Kansas. But hubby got a great offer before I did so he gets priority! The will be expanding by 5 stores in the next couple of years. The owner beleives in Slow growth and Zero debt. He will not over extend himself to grow rapidly like zales did. its a single owner company. All of our merch is Paid for. Nothing is on loan. He has zero debt. Its a solid Co.

Anyway... Texas is a good state to do business in and he will open in Texas eventually. He bases it on the amount of wedding licences issued. Cause thats his market. Bridal. He goes where the young couples are.

: )

I have always cleaned my diamonds with toothpaste but now will switch to Windex.
