Anyone here own a Sun Conure?

I am going to be adopting a Sun conure in the next few days. She is still a young one! I was wondering if anyone here owns one, and If they have any advise for a first time bird owner..

Is she a type of Lovebird? She looks just like a Lovebird but really colorful. Beautiful birdy!!

I have 4 parrotts an african grey congo ,green wing mc caw and a yellow nape amazon and a blue front amazon ,they can be messy .but they are fun and mine talk up a storm very noisey here .

no thats not part of the love bird family it is actually part of the Parrot Family they can speak it tought.

They love cooked pasta!!!
Lots of fun, she's a nice looking bird. :) :) :)
We have Parrotts, but not a Sun, we did look at a few,
but they don't talk, so we went with the African Greys
They talk up a storm!!!! A little to much!!! LOL

We have had several birds over the years we do not own one at this time though. We have had cockatiels's, parkeetes(sp), severe macaw, and a nanday conure. The conure that we had was very noisy and loved water. We left his cage door open quite a bit and whenever he heard water running he would climb down into the floor and waddle through the house to find the source of the water. We took several showers with him.

All of mine love many kinds of fruit, nuts, popcorn and pasta. Good luck with your new family member. Make sure he has lots of toys in his cage to keep him occupied, just like puppies they need toys to play with to keep from getting bored.

By the way a gorgeous bird. Is it a male or female? Do you have a name yet?

Thanks! I am not sure if it is a male or a female or how to tell for that matter! Any ideas?

I never really knew either. I was just told when we had our birds what sex they were. I guess you will know if she/he ever lay's eggs. Good Luck.

We were told that the only way to tell a bird's sex is by a blood test. Some female birds don't produce eggs. :confused:

Sex of a sun conure is determined via DNA test. I had one at one time...couldn't handle the squawking! Sheesh! I called it a she but she was soooo very demanding on time it was not funny. If I walked in the room and didn't pay her the attention she wanted when she wanted it, she'd make SURE of it. That's why I called her a SHE! (She-devil....B*&#@). I ordinarily wouldn't mind but she wouldn't stop until you'd come over and pay her attention and she wouldn't let you leave her until she was finished with you. Pretty demanding little bird....Beautiful, just demanding.

hi I'm new to the forum. I dont' have a yorie now. we are thinking about getting one.

Has anyone had any problems with thier yorkie and birds?

The reason I joined was to find out how they did with birds.I have 2 parrots now and african grey and a 3 week old greenwing macaw. We had a quaker but my sons dog ate it while we were away last fall. We were told as long as the puppy was young and around the birds from the time they were very small they would be ok..... he wasn't. he even managed to get the quaker out of his cage. We were all heartbroken and dont' want to take a chance without hearing from some owners first.

They get along great. Our African Grey Hellen calls Princess all the time, she can even bark like her!!! :eek: :eek: :eek: It's too funny :D :D
But really, we have birds, and all of them love Princess :) :)
And Princess loves them :) :)

I love Sun Conures!!! I don't have one but my husband and I just adore them! We know if we ever get a bird we'd want a sun conure! Good luck! Feel free to post pics anytime! What a gorgeous bird!

I use to own a sun conure. My dad has it now. My new husband wouldn't let me keep the bird. It was like pulling tooth and nail to get him to let me keep the dogs and fish. My sun is very noisy and loves water. It used to love me all the time but now when I visit at my dads it goes out of its way to bite me. They are alot of work especially for a first time bird owner. You will do fine I am sure. They are messy and loud but their love and devotion is worth it! Good luck with your new bird and post pictures soon! :)

Wow, I never heard of them before, but after reading this thread, I am ready to get one! Birds are SO SMART, and people often underestimate their intellect and their need for stimulation. This is what makes them challenging and fun at the same time. I don't know about Sun conures at all, but my cousin got an African Gray when he (my cousin) was well into his 50's. Since they are so long lived, he is going to have to put Baxter in his will.....I hear Winston Churchill's parrot died just a couple of years ago...

Have fun, and post lots of pics. I am intrigued by birds, as you can probably tell, but I don't have room in my life for one right now.

I have a friend who has conures. They can be very noisy and behave like guard dogs. You can hear the bird a block from the house. They can also be so bonded to one person that they will bite very hard and draw blood when strangers come. They need lots of attention.

Hi, Did you get the sun conure yet? Hope you enjoy it. Yes, we had one and ours was quite vocal :) we only have a african grey now and what a talker he is, verry enjoyable. Nice to get them when they are quite young.

I just read this posting and wanted to comment, we never have had any problem with our yorkie and the bird. Our grey grew up with our yorkie Cassie and never ever any problem, we got the largest cage for the grey, with the play gymn on the top, we have an enclosed patio with heat and air, we spend a lot of time there and he enjoys that, so he is quite comfortable. We had three cockatiels and they all talked and one barked and would call himself doggie bird (finally let our son,wife and boys adopt them into their home) they are very enjoyable birds, the sun conure is a beautiful bird, however it was far too noisy for us and our grey started to pick up on the screeching, so we chose to find the conure a new home. Thankfully Timmy quit the screeching :) :) much to our delight. Our new yorkie seems to be getting along fine with Timmy. Anyone looking to get a bird, I would highly reccomend the African Grey, love em. Terrific talkers, amazing they are.

Hello! Sorry it has taken me so long to reply to this thread. We got her a few weeks ago. Everything went fine at first. But as the days went by Gizmo got agressive towards her. He did not want her to be around me at all. And when she would walk around on the floor he would try to play with her. Which would have been fine, but he would try to pounce on her. So now she is at my friends house until we decide what to do. I am just worried about her safety.
