Medical coders?
 
Just wondering if there are any CPC out there? My husband is currently doing his residency and I have a business degree but am interested in getting into coding. I see all these at home training course commercials and was wondering if you knew if any of these were what I needed to do? I just can't imagine going back to college at this point in my life, but if I could do it at home, it just might work. But if these things are a waste then I don't want to! Anyway, any info would be appreciated!

I do not think I can help, but in my area, the local university (and probably community colleges) have classes on this. You can probably call the educational institutions in your area (vo-tech, etc) and see if there is anything like it there. Here is is a few nights a week for 2-3 months and they provide your name to doctors and vice/versa. I think (not for sure) that here they also start you out with a doctor or two and once you get the hang of it, you can add more if you want. A friend of mine said that there is a high demand for it right now. He said that you can work from home or at a doctors office. He said that the best classes to take are the hands on classes at a college instead of online, etc. Good luck!

I worked in Insurance for 33 years and learned the CPT and ICD-9 codes. There's a ton of them but theres books and classes you can take. I have thought about looking into that but it would take time away from YT.

If you do a search, someone was just asking about this recently because she was thinking about going to school for it. Maybe some of that info will help.

In know I'm simplifying it, but..
 
Codes are numbers that they assign to medical conditions and procedures for billing and insurance purposes.

Transcription is changing the doctors spoken word into written word.

Thanks. I have seen commercials for getting into medical transcription and always thought it was the same as coding ;)
