Has Anyone Tried Any of the Winter Olympic Sports? I'm a self confessed Olympic nut and I'm always amazed at how most of the Winter Olympic games can be so dangerous. Anyone here ever tried or is currently involved in sports like: Bobsled Cross County Skiing or Nordic Combined Luge Curling Figueskating Downhill Skiing Ski Jumping etc.? What made you do it? |
My son used to play Hockey on a traveling team. I love to watch all the winter sports. |
my daughter figured skated for 8 years. I went to every lesson and sat through 4 shows and 6 rehearsals every year and loved every minute of it. She's 20 now and went skating the other day for the first time in a long time and now wants to get new skates as hers are too tight and skate more! |
I love to downhill ski, but I haven't done that in years! I got into it because my brother use to race! It's pretty fun, when the sun's out. I went on a trip to colorado with my best friend and her Dad and we had a blast!!!! :happyboun |
Okay, I have tried Curling! My parents live in Canada, and it is quite a popular thing to do there, and it was really hard to do! I have also snowboarded, skied, and ice skated! I am always up for anything new, I guess that is why I tried these things. Well, that and my little sister can now do all of these sports and better, and always the competitor, I have to get good at them to beat her. ;) Jessica |

You guys are so adventurous! I'd be too chicken to try anything except curling and after watching that today I realized I don't think I can do that either! I'd be so out of shape that I'd slip and fall or run out of breath trying to sweep the path and make the stone go in a weird direction and have my team so mad at me! It actually looks like a lot of fun.. I was a little confused how they scored points and why they kick the stone away when it's still inside the circles. Do you wear special shoes with spikes or something? |
Now I didn't say I was very good...:) There are special shoes to wear, they have a special tracktion on them. Honestly, there was so much to learn I didn't understand every aspect, except when to sweep or when not to sweep. It was fun to play...but it was a lot of hard work, your right about that part. All of the winter sports are challenging, in there own way. If you ever get the chance to play I would totally go for it :D Jessica |
I don't think there is a Curling place in Southern California... but hey who knows what I'll find... It is So. Cal. and we have the darnedest things here! |
I had a go at Luge when I was in the Army, a Longgggggg time ago. I was 19!! It was great fun, very exhilarating, but it is absolutely agony on the neck and shoulders. You only have a piece of bungy like cord, that is attached to your head as a bit of support. You have to have STRONGER THAN METAL neck muscles to keep your head from bouncing on the ice! You also have to sit for HOURS and memorise every turn on every course, and what line to take, how high up the ice you need to be to get around the corner, how much you need to steer and rely on your body weight to get safely around the course. The sledge weighs 35 Kilos, so if you come off in front, and that baby goes over you at speed, OUCH would be a very small understatement!! :D I did love it though. :D |
I cross-country ski and have watched in person some of the best cross-country skiers in the nation compete. Their level of excellence is so beyond my comprehension I can't even fathom it. And to think Americans are lucky to crack the top 20 worldwide. |
It seems there is a Bay Area Curling Club in San Francisco: http://www.bayareacurling.com I wasn't too sure of the rules either of curling, so I looked it up and found this page which does help explain a few things: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curling I actually want to try curling, but the only Olympic sports I've done are ice skating and skiing, but nowhere near the level of the Olympians. ;) |
Long track speedskating is a big thing in my native country, the Netherlands. I used to go speedskating with my dad all the time. So much fun! Other than that, I've been doing some cross country skiing and downhill skiing here in Wisconsin. I hate the cold, but enjoy the snow! |
