Mardi Gras Memories Well, it's Mardi Gras time :) ! Next tuesday is Mardi Gras Day. I was surprised to see that there are plenty of hotel rooms available and there are even flights available in and out of N.O. Mardi Gras weekend. I'm a die hard, even when I was pregnant I would sit on the neutral ground all day long with about 100 close friends and family waiting for a parade. Someone would always bring a couch or two, we had our own port-a-potty and plenty of Popeye's chicken to go around! Growing up we had the ladders with the seats on top and after we grew out of the seats then we would just stand on ladders, usually 10 of us in a row, yelling at the top of our lungs for beads and cups!!! I'm gonna miss it this year :( I just think that my daughter is too young for her first Mardi Gras. My parents disagree, my mom was at a parade when she went into labor with me and they have brought me to Mardi Gras every year since I was born. I did agree that some of my fondest memories were from Mardi Gras past, BUT there is plenty of time for me to make Mardi Gras memories with my daughter, when she is old enough to enjoy it!!! She knows how to raise her hands but has not yet caught on to yelling "Throw me something Mister", she's still working on Bye-Bye (she is 9 months old). Any one have any Mardi Gras memories that they would like to share? By the way, all you out-of-towners make sure you visit www.mardigras.com for everything mardi gras related, even live web cams!!!! |
I was born in N.O. but grew up in Lafayette where we also had Mardi Gras. I remember a lot of beer and drunk people. Frankly, I don't think a lot of what I saw would be tolerated today, but I could be wrong. We had friends in some of the Krewes and would go to some of the balls from time to time. They were outrageous, but fun. I remember I had a friend with an older sister who was given the choice of being in one of the courts or going to Europe for the whole summer, and she chose to be in the ball. I thought she was insane. Actually, I still do. When we got older, we would take the whole week off from school and go skiing!!! We turned into skiing nuts, all of us kids. |
Thank you for your memories, Claire. I have never ever experienced a Mardi Gras celebration, in fact I have only been to Louisiana once, but I can tell you this...... the best bear claws in the world come from a little bakery just off the Ponchatrain Bridge. :teethysmi |

I know New 'Awlins from going to the Heritage and Jazz Festival!! Lordy, I LOVE that city! Good food, good music, good fun....ahhhhhh!!! We hadn't gone in a number of years and we were going to go two years ago for New Years, but I had an accident before Christmas and our trip was cancelled. Our hopes were to go this spring for the festival, but I can't imagine that they are going to have it. :( It's such a vibrant city, that I am sure that they will be back and partying in no time!!! After all there was one bar that never did close.... :p |

LOL I don't remember -- I have only been to Louisiana once and it was 27 years ago. We had just crossed the long bridge, and we were hungry and like so often, there was one of life's little blessings in the form of a pastry shop. Absolutely the best bear claws in the entire civilized world. No joke, these puppies were about the size of a dinner plate and were pure heaven. |

I seen on the news yesterday that they are making repairs and that they will have the Jazz Fest. this year. I love Mardi Gras although we did not attend the parade tonight. My step daughter has been sick for the past couple of days. I am a member of The Krewe Of Aphrodite, we ride on 2/24.(Night parde) I have been riding for about 9 years now and I get the biggest adrenalin rush when I see all the people yelling and waving. |
Mardi Gras in Mobile, Alabama--- come on by! This whole month is "Mardi Gras Crazy" in Mobile, Al... Public school is out for the whole week... The parades and balls are already happening all over... :) Did you know that Mardi Gras started in Mobile, Alabama... I was shocked to find out after i moved here two years ago... |
JazzFest IS ON!! go to www.nola.com and find the listing of shows.... it is going to be party as usual! d |
I lived in Denham Springs when I was younger and we would always go to the Mardi Gras parades that the parishes had. My parents were a little worried to take me to N.O. I still have all my beads and coins, they are very special to me. When we moved I was so sad...mind you didn't miss the flooding but everything else. On Fat Tues our neighborhood friends would get together for a crawfish boil. At school we would celebrate too. We have been back to LA twice in the past few years but I so want to go back for Mardi Gras, not even to N.O. just to Baton Rouge. I keep the traditions though every year I make Jumbalya or Gumbo and a king cake and a few other things for fat tues just so we can still feel like we are there. Our friends will send us things from LA sometimes so I don't have to go searching for stuff that is kindof like LA food taste. |
It sounds like so much fun! My sister is going this year and I'm a bit jealous!! If your daughter is only 9 months, you have plenty of Mardi Gras with her to come, so if you feel you should stay home, don't worry. My bf worked in NO after the hurricane, so I've seen so many devastating pictures. I'm happy to hear that the city is able to come back for this celebration. |
Mardi Gras I live in Denham Springs, have for most of my life. Mardi Gras started full swing this weekend. I was in N.O. It was party as usual. Besides the water marks on the buildings, all is great and everything went well. Love the pics of "Moose". He looks alot like my Tootie... d |
Cool I loved living there. I miss it, sometimes. Thanks about moose, I think she a cutie too. Yeah she's a girl...shocks a lot of people :D Is your baby full yorkie. Moose is a yorkie-poo |
wellll, they tell me he is... he is in the photo gallery... He is HUGE, he is almost 12 pounds and has REALLY BIG ears... there is no way he could have "up" ears. I love him just the way he is, no matter what... I have 3 other pups and he fits in just perfect and wore his Mardi Gras beads this weekend with such class! d |
