New Paypal Scam -- Please Read!!
 

I just received an email from paypal stating that I sent a payment to someone for the payment of a $239 cell phone. I panicked because I did NOT buy a phone. At the bottom of the message it says "if you didn't authorize this payment, click here for a full refund" When you click on the tab it wants you to sign in with your paypal info, of course, so they can rip you off. The screen looks just like the paypal page. I knew something was wierd. So I went to the paypal site directly and checked my balance and it did not say that I made any such purchase.

I hope nobody falls for this!

What are these scammers going to think of next.....This world is going down hill fast with all the people out there getting ripped off. :(

I have been getting these kinds of spoofs for almost three years.. Normally Paypal will not email you! other than send you a receipt for a purchase or payment or keep you updated if you have filed a complaint with a purchase off ebay, same with Ebay, anytime I receive an email from Ebay or paypal I do not respond to them I automatically forward them to paypal or Ebay.
So if anyone receives anything from paypal or ebay forward it to this address
they always will respond with a yes, "this is from us" or "no this is a spoof" and they will respond.....so if you are uncertain please send to the following
address.
spoof@paypal.com
spoof@ebay.com

another way to tell is the the real site address it should say https://www.

You can set your eBay email preferences to html only. Any "real" emails from eBay or Paypal will NOT contain any logos or pictures. The scammers out there have no way to tell what your preference is set to, those emails will still contain eBay and Paypal logos. Setting the preference does NOT affect any other emails you receive.

Wow, I didn't know this - what great advise. I have always taken the stand to delete any emails from ebay & paypal. I then go to both sites to see if there is mail. This will work even better.

This type of scam is called "phishing" because the scammer is fishing for your information. These type of emails can also come from other companies like banks and stores. Don't ever click on any link in these emails. Open a new window and check your accounts that way.

yeah, I got one from ebay today, it was pretty convincing. It was of a "question from ebay member" saying that I was selling a laptop. Of course i wasn't selling anything, but it would have been confusing if I was. Everylink went to the spoofed sign-in page that wasn't ebay.com

My mom did once about a year or so ago. She got an email saying that she was invited to be a power seller. She typed in her info., and then a little while later asked my dad. My dad was like, "NO!!! Why didn't you ask me first!?!" She had to call eBay and change her password. Nothing happened, thank God. :)
