Have you ever heard of Flat Stanley? I just have to tell you guys about this... My human first grader has what at first seemed like a MONSTER of a project this year.. They are reading the Flat Stanley series of books and have to collect postcards from all 50 states! Like I said, at first it seemed like way too much to ask of first graders. Well, my first grader only needs three more states and she can put the stickers on the correct city and state by herself! (She has to put a sticker on the map for each postcard she gets!) I thought we would only be able to get a few postcards, but it has really grown and all she needs now are KY, ND, and VT. I'm so amazed at how much all of the kids have learned from this and hope any of you with Elementary school age kids get the opportunity to do this type of a project! If nothing else, the books are great! Totally off topic huh? I apologize, I just finished helping her with the postcards that came today and am still pretty excited! Brenda :D |
I'm a teacher, and I've heard of this. I wish I lived in one of those states so I can send you one!! Good luck! |
Connie and her daughter both live in ND. If they can't help you out let me know my daughter lives in Fargo,ND. Having kids herself she would be glad to help your child achieve a done project. When my daughter was in 1st grade they also did a flat Stanley project. Theirs though was a full length drawing of them that had to be sent to another state. You then took this paper person around and took photo's of it visiting places and then wrote a report on all of the places it had visited. It was fun! People looked at you strange as you were taking pictures with a paper person but that only added to the fun for us. |
That's sooo nice of you... Actually, the original project was for K to send her doll out to people in all 50 states and get pictures and letters.. That's how it was worded... So I asked the teacher about it and she said she meant either and that the goal was to receive SOMETHING from each state... Okay, so my daughter has gotten several of her doll and photos, but sending that thing all over and asking someone to take time out of their day to take a photo of themselves with a doll and send a story is a LOT to ask...so we did both. Kendra has even gotten a couple of postcards from overseas, so we put a US map in her bedroom and a huge world map in the playroom.. Thank goodness she picked ladybugs for stickers...They are small and they come packaged by the 100... so she has the same stickers on her school map as at home.. Brenda |
What a GREAT project. I would gladly send a post card, but I am in Georgia. Give your little one congrats from Chattiesmom on a job well done! |
Thank you and I will! She's my smarty pants. She was moved from Kindergarten to First Grade after a month this school year and is making straight A's in First Grade... WOOO HOOO That's MY baby! OK....stop me.. I'm a proud mamma.. Bren |
Well, you should be proud. I would be crowing from the rooftops!!! LOL btw.... is the pic in your avatar a Boxer? |
He's a pound pooch.. His records say Pug.. He's mixed with something pretty ugly... He's 26lbs and a really really good dog...but "jump back" ugly. We love him dearly, but no diamond tiara for him.. : ) We need the new yorkie to balance out our home. Bren |
Yes, what a great project. My daughter who is in 4th grade just finished doing her flat stanley project. We had to send Stanley to a different state to live for 2 months. Stanley stayed with a friend of our in Seattle. My daughter had to do a project then on the state Washington. Then Stanley went in a box with the pictures of him doing various things around the state, souveniors and things that represented the state he stayed at. I think this is a great project to learn geography. |
DD had a Flat Stanley project. They had to mail him off and have the receipant take him places and take his picture. Her Stanley went to the Daytona 500 :) My brother's nephew who was living in Italy, sent his back here to the states to my brother. They took Flat Stanley to a Redskins football and were taking his picture sitting in the stands, when a lady stopped and said....hey, I've got a Flat Stanley too. They took their pictures together and titled it...Flat Stanley finds a friend ;) Last year or the year before...Clint Eastwood had one at the Oscars :D |
That is so cute! My friend's granddaughter sent her a flat stanley and she took pictures of him around San Diego. I hope my nephew does that project so he can send me one! My husband has some family in KY, pm me if you still need someone from there! It's such a cute idea, why didn't they think of this while WE were kids!? I love recieving mail. Maybe we should have a flat stanley yorkie for YT or something- everytime it gets to a new place we will take a pic of overselves with it and post it to a thread! LOL But Stanley isn't a good yorkie name. Flat Cloey? Flat yorkie? haha |

If you type in "Flat Stanley" into a search, you will find tons of interesting photos. Kendra's went to Mt Rushmore and a couple of school tours... I saw a picture on internet of President Bush with a Stanley doll! That little guy gets around! Brenda |
