Critters that munch on tomatoes? I went the other day to pick two tomatoes that had ripened. Gosh darn it something ate halfway through them. What do you all think? Could it be a squirrel? The tomatoes were left on the vine Hubby has now wrapped the tomatoe plants in a wire mesh. |
SQUIRRELS!!!! They have just about eaten anything in my yard that produces veggies or fruits, plus even the FLOWERS from my pear tree, so my chances of getting even a couple pears from this tree, are doubtful. I have netting that I throw over my dwarf fruit trees and my vegetable plants.....I plant in 5 gal containers anymore, so the buckets are easily covered. |
Hopefully it is a squirrel. I would think you would see them during the day in the general area. The alternative is rats. |
Thanks guys. Must be the squirrels they are often in my backyard. |

Chipmunks!! Often they eat the bottom ones or the ones that have fallen. |
I gave up growing tomatoes because of the squirrels taking one bite out of each tomato and leaving the rest. Grrrr. We once caught my Lhasa Apso pulling the tomatoes off the vine and devouring them. She loved them. Lol |
If you have deer they will eat them. I grown patio tomatoes that stay on my deck away from the railings. Never had squirrels bother them and I am infested with them lol. |
It's hornworms! OMG the most gross screeching fat worms..ate all our beefmaster tomatoes. If you find tiny droppings shaped like a flower...they're hornworms. |
