Total hip replacement
 

I am facing this within a few weeks, and I am terrified! Has anyone had this procedure? Any pointers?

I have not been through it, but praying your procedure goes smoothly and you have a quick recovery.

I haven't, but I did help my Dad when he had one three years ago. He was 80 years old, and he had the minimally invasive procedure. Was it fun? No. But he was walking without a walker in under two weeks.

My mom had one many years ago. Before the surgery I remember her having to climb up the stairs on her hands and knees because she was in so much pain. The day after the surgery she was yelling at us kids saying "I don't know why I let you talk me into this!" Two months later she said "I think I will have the other hip done" My point is that it will be painful, it will be difficult for a short while but the long term benefits are absolutely worth it.

I had my right hip done last November. Are you having the anterior approach surgery? I ask because that is so slick and the healing process is so much faster. Hopefully younRe a candidate for that. I was up with a walker the evening after my surgery, and was back to work (with someone else driving) the next week. Recovery was really fast for me.

Do check into the anterior approach and see if that is what you are having. They do not cut all the muscles when they go in that was so recovery is easier.

My MIL just had hip surgery and she is about 1mth out and is doing just *great*! I couldn't believe how quickly she progressed bc she has sooo many health issues. So if she did great, I'm sure you will too!

I've had both hips replaced. 1st in 2001 and the 2nd one 2 or 3 yeas ago. First one was the hardest. The last one... with improved surgical procedures, better pain meds went so much better. End result of both has been fabulous... NO MORE PAIN!!! Without the hip replacements, I have no doubt that I'd be either bed ridden, in wheel and blitzed out of my mind on pain meds. Once you've had one done, you will know right away if & when the other one needs to be done. That bone on bone pain is nothing that is going to go away or get any better no matter what you do.

Tips: Be sure you do your exercises afterwards even though they hurt. It will help you to get to the pain free/cane free stage faster & easier. They are not hard exercises, but they will hurt for awhile. I was pain free & cane free within 6 weeks. You will need some help at home for at least a couple weeks, so hope you have someone to help you.

A few months after I had my 2nd one done, I got a mailer from the hospital announcing their new improved method of doing the hip replacements. Smaller incisions, shorter hospital time, less painful, faster healing time, etc. So your surgery should go even better than either of mine. By now most all hospitals are probably using that newer method. Good luck! You won't regret it at all once you are all healed up.

THIS is the approach my friend in Florida had and it was actually FABULOUS!! My friend did just like you did....up with a walker the evening of surgery....home on day 3....and good as new well within 2 months!! She had some fabulous surgeon in Florida do hers and if I ever have to have this done, this is the approach I will choose, and that doc in Florida is pretty hard to beat!

:thumbup: with any surgery there will be some pain but like maxdog said, once you are through the pain, you will jump for joy and know you made the correct decision that will make the coming years easier for you. The best Dr. who has preformed this surgery many times would also be important.

Tomorrow will be two weeks since I had the surgery. The surgery itself was great due to the anesthesia, but the post surgery part is very rough. I'm taking one small step at a time, and each day gets a little better. I had my right hip replaced, but also have to have my left hip replaced...not looking forward to that. I have avasular neurosis in my left hip, and had osteoarthritis in my right!

Good to hear the procedure went well. The "one small step at a time" attitude is the best. It took all of your life for your hip to reach the point that it needed to be replaced and the cure is not an overnight fix. But in a few months you will be pain free and you will be able to look back at this time and see that it is worth it.

I had my left hip replaced on 11-4, using the anterior approach with HANA table, like before. I am now pain free, walking without a limp, and able to go up and down stairs without any issues! I am about 97% back to normal...better than normal!����������
