Favorite Quotes Some of you may or may not know (or care) that I am a huge fan of Albert Einstein. His humility matched his intelligence and continues to be an inspiration to me. Two quotes by him, which I love, follow: "If you can't explain it simply - you don't understand it well enough." and "The more the knowledge - the lesser the ego. The lesser the knowledge - the more the ego." These quotes resonate with me so deeply and I carry these with me in my daily life as a reminder that we are more than what we think we know. I'd love to learn of some quotes which you all find inspirational. Maybe I can add them to my collection! |
I am a total quote junkie - I keep a long list that I save. I completely *love* these 2 you picked and will be adding them....most especially bc I think they're both so very salient to this community, ya know? They fit. You might really enjoy this thread too: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ani...fare-fans.html Here are some of my all time faves: If to be feelingly alive to the sufferings of my fellow-creatures is to be a fanatic, I am one of the most incurable fanatics ever permitted to be at large. - William Wilberforce All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self evident. - Arthur Schopenhauer How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours. -Wayne Dyer Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can. -Arthur Ashe "Humanity's true moral test, its fundamental test, consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect humankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it." —Milan Kundera “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.“ - Mahatma Ghandi When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before. --Jacob Riis When I do good, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad, and that is my religion. --Abraham Lincoln |
I've never read those quotes by Einstein, love them so much, and now I'm convinced I've never had a math teach who understood math! I have so many favorites, but I've never gathered them together. This is one of my favorites. “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” ― Mahatma Gandhi |
Haha, I agree on the math teacher fitting that quote. A couple I love are: "Just because someone doesn't love you the way YOU want to be loved, doesn't mean they don't love you with everything they have." And this one helped me be a better parent because when my kids became teenagers, they knew I meant what I said...:D "Never make a promise you don't intend to keep." |
:) "Life's too short to stuff a mushroom"....:D xx |
Mother Teresa: We can do no great things .. But we can do little things with great love. And another ; Don't tell me what you think about a thing! Tell what you are willing to do! JFK: Some men see things as they are and ask why? I dream of things that never were and ask why not? There is more to life than increasing its speed. There is no cure for stupidity To see the world in a grain of sand ... And heaven in a wild flower .... Blake We can only see as far as to the boundaries of our first prejudice A lie may be borne an orphan - but acquires a family very quickly I don't worry about the meaning of life anymore... Instead I look at the meaning *in my life* Reason may explain the dark - but reason does not give me a light for the dark What lays within ... lays without God does not play with dice Albert Einstein Just a few - I have never captured all quotes that have captured my imagination but maybe one day I will |
"Make sure you are right, then go ahead"....Davy Crockett "You can all go to Hell, I'm going to Texas!"....Davy Crockett |

Is it wrong for me to love that quote even if I'm an Okie girl :p |
Here's the fisherman's version of "the grass is greener" and "a bird in the hand" that I've thoroughly enjoyed for decades: "You don't leave fish to find fish!" unknown fisherman |
The true test of a man's Character is what you do when no one is watching John Wooden |
My two very favorite people are Mark Twain and Davy Crockett....some of my favorite "Twainisms".... “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” “It takes your enemy and your friend, working together, to hurt you to the heart: the one to slander you and the other to get the news to you.” It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt” “Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference.” “The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog.” “The older I get, the more clearly I remember things that never happened.” (THIS one is brutally clear to me!!!) My father had some really great "quotes".....my very favorite is: "We are all human, we all make mistakes.....STUPID is making the same mistake TWICE!!!!!" (I love this nugget from him and I utilize it on a daily basis....it has kept me on the straight and narrow and kept me from backsliding into stupidity numerous times....thank you daddy!) |
Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better. - Maya Angelu My goal in life is to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am. - Paul Dunn |
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. -Aristotle |
My favorite quote these days is “The first half of my life I went to school, the second half of my life I got an education.” - by Mark Twain |
