Fire ants! Need safe remedy for pets Can anyone give me suggestions for getting rid of fire ant mounds in my yard that will not harm my dog? I've read online about several remedies but not sure if any of them work. The mounds are in our back yard where I let Betty Boop out to play. Thanks! |
Diatomaceous earth. Check on Amazon. I use Fossil Power. I used this in a window sill and no living ants left after a few minutes. I put some on the opening of the anthills and I'm not sure about the outcome, but I don't see any ants living or dead. I also sprinkled some in my yorkie's fur-she has a very oily coat and can be itchy, it worked immediately. She has never had fleas, but I'm thinking about using it this year instead of Frontline for the safety factor. Let me know how it goes |
Actually, Amdro Fire Ant Killer is not going to kill your pet! It only takes a very small amount to treat an ant bed mound, and the ants take the small amount you sprinkle on the mound, down into the nest away from the pet! I have used Amdro all over my yard, for many years, with no ill effects to my dogs. I put it on any mounds, sprinkle a max of a tablespoonful, across the top of the mound, in the evening after the dogs are up for the night....the dew activates the bait, the ants carry it into the ground away from the dog's reach overnight, and I even put it in a broadcast spreader and scatter it into the grass all over my yard....the granules fall into the grass, the dogs dont eat it because they cant even get to it.....and I have no fire ants at all, anywhere in my yard! My dogs are never outside unsupervised any way, so even if they did get into a fire ant mound, they could never start eating up mouthfuls of the Amdro because there is not that much on the mound and I would not allow them to graze on ant mounds! |
I use Over & Out in yard. I do this every 6 months. I put it in the spreader and spread through out the yard and then water it in. I do this at night after the doggies have had their last night pee pee. I haven't had any Fire Ants in many many years. |
Thank you all for the suggestions. They all sound like good choices. Has anyone heard of Come and Get it? It's main ingredient is Spinosad, which is in Ivermectin. Two nurseries have recommended it as safe for pets. |
