Likes / Dislikes of Outdoor Wicker Furniture...? I'm thinking about replacing our current outdoor dining set - which is now a glass/metal typical outdoor table, with chairs made of that tight webbed cloth stuff (w/ metal frame). I just feel it's....blah..? Whereas brown or espresso wicker can look warmer / look more like furniture. I want a wicker table w/ a glass top too...bc I'm worried that if the table is just wicker weave alone, it will be "wavy", right...? So if you have outdoor wicker, do you like it or dislike it? Any advice? Any advice on price? (I'm looking for 6 seats w/ arms and cushions, and a 59-70" table...we currently have a 59" table) How does it wear? (keep in mind I'm in the very harsh Phoenix desert) |
My outdoor table & chairs are teak, so can't help you there. But I have the outdoor vinyl "wicker" loveseat, chairs, ottomans & end tables with cushions that I absolutely love. It is more comfortable than some of my indoor furniture, and looks cozy, easy to clean. It has been sitting on the patio (uncovered) a little over 3 years in sun, rain, and wind, and is holding up very well. It was the Martha Stewart collection from Home Depot, same one is no longer there. |
I LOVE wicker, cane and rattan, I have inside and out side. No patio table set, I have side tables, chairs and coffee tables. I have 3/4 inch glass tops made for all my tables indoors and out doors. These are small items, I put them in my truck, bring to glass cutter they measure then pick them up when they are ready. Years back I read wicker, rattan, cane furniture should be sprayed with water to prevent drying out, I spray mine spring time then in the fall. I have had them for yearssss. |
I have quite a few pieces of outdoor resin wicker. I started with two chairs and a small end table, for my breezeway. I loved it so much, I then bought a dining table with four chairs. The dining table has a glass top and the hole in the center for an umbrella. I then built a sunroom, and moved the two chairs to the sunroom, and bought a loveseat and a coffee table to go in the sunroom too. The coffee table is all wicker, so it has a wicker top, not glass, and it is "wavy" as you said. I just keep a large tray on top of it. The tray works well for carrying drinks & such through to the sunroom anyway, so it works fine for my purposes. I also bought one extra chair at that tine as it by itself & on clearance. So i now have 1 dining table, 1 coffee table, 1 end table, 1 loveseat and 7 chairs! I have Hampton Bay resin wicker in Nutmeg. My particular stuff is discontinued now, but you can still see pics of it online. I bought it at Home Depot. |
Our outdoor set is teak. I don't like the look of wicker, but our teak chairs sure aren't that comfy! I like the idea above about using a large tray as your "table top". |
1 Attachment(s) I had real wicker. But they don't hold up well in the cold. I put covers on them. They hold up for awhile..I have plastic fake wicker now. Easy to maintain. Warmer climates wicker should be fine. If its well built. Both I had were comfy. I keep them in covers in the winter but they also have a roof over them. fwiw |
I think the set was from Costco heavy duty with 2 chairs , love seat table with heavy glass top.....Price ?? forget $1k+...It was the cheapest and smallest one. To fit the porch and have plenty of walking room |
Has anyone had any issues with the plastic covered wicker look becoming brittle and separating? Do you bring it in in the winter? I like the look of those sets but worry that they won't hold up to our extreme climate changes too. |
That's what mine is. IME its lasting long then the natural wicker. But I cover mine and I have it in a porch so not all the elements are direct = rain sun ect. But the Natural was in the same spot. Pretty much anything in the outdoors is gonna have wear. IME covers are your friend when not in use. Maybe not the best material but affordable and durable for the price point.JME... FWIW I'm in the Pacific NW so nothing extreme but 4 seasons |
I see you live in AZ...I had wicker here in SoCA but it only lasted a year in the sun. It became brittle and broke apart. It might work if you have a lot of shade. |

1 Attachment(s) we also had this debate at our house - we went with the aluminum set at Sam's - just put it together this weekend - absolutely love it & it is comfortable!!! Seats 6 & came with cushions - And a Lazy Susan on the table top - here is a picture - was 1045. |
