Vaccume sealer Does anyone know of a good one? I want one that works but don't need top of the line. I buy the big roll of freshpet food for Lola and freeze it, and she doesn't go through it quickly enough to not vaccume seal it. I freeze 4 thin pieces together, so that's 4 days of food, basically it's the size of a fat hamburger. Can a vaccume sealer handle that small amount without a ton of waste and can I seal food I've already frozen? I have a Costco membership and know people with BJs and Sams. |
I have a "Food Saver" vacuum for several years, works great. |
I was just checking these out at Kohl's today...also wanting one! So I'll be following this thread to hear other people's opinions. I want to use mine for meats, cheeses, and leftovers too...we seem to always have a lot of leftover food with just two people. Would definitely be nice for the Freshpet! |

I have had a Food Saver in my home since my brother bought me one for Christmas about 12 years ago....I ADORE my Food Saver! I purchase the "new upgrade" that comes out about every 4 years.....and I will not be without one ever again!! I buy in bulk and freeze all my fresh veggies in season....I buy boneless skinless chicken breasts from my Zaycon delivery deal, and I freeze them up for all of us, including the dogs. I use my Food Saver to freeze jerky treats for the dogs....I freeze cornbread dressing every Thanksgiving and every Christmas and we eat on it all year long. It tasts exactly like I had just made it! I even pulled two paks out to eat this past Thanksgiving.....I dont cook all that huge spread for just my son and I..... that I had frozen in my Food Saver....they had gotten pushed to the back of the freezer and I had put them up back in 2010.....I told my son "This is going to be a real testament to how good this machine actually is"....we had those two paks for Thanksgiving 2014, and that dressing was just as good as the day I put it up, 4 years before!!! NO freezer burn, no weird flavor..... I just put up about 16 more bags from this Christmas, divided with my brother, along with Honey Baked Ham and their smoked turkey breast....makes great meals all during the year! I HIGHLY recommend a Food Saver to anyone that is even thinking about getting one! Last year, I bought fresh corn on the cob when it went on sale 15 ears for $5.00....I bought 30 ears to eat off the cob, grill and boil, and another 15 ears that I stripped the kernels from, to use in veggie soup and cajun corn dishes.....you will NOT regret getting a Food Saver! I think I helped member 107barney decide on hers and she is loving it too!!! |
Any recs on which one to get? What size bags do I need for Lola's food? Can I vaccume seal food that's already frozen? It's in baggies right now. |
I had a cheap junky one years ago. It was good for when I bought big packets of pork chops, chicken breasts, etc at Sams and wanted to divide them up to freeze. The roll that fit it was expensive though. I remember calculating it out and it was cheaper for me to use Ziploc freezer bags. I also didnt like that mine was small and wouldn't take the wider roll, and i couldn 't use it to re-seal bought bags, like potato chip bags. My friend has a big one (i'll find out the brand) and she loves it. She lives near a cow farm, and they order half a cow and she vacuum saves it all and packs it in her big chest freezer. But it also will re-seal almost any other plastic bag. So snacks she buys for her grandkids that wont get used from one weekend to the next, she vacuum seals. If you get one, be sure to check the features so it does all you want it to and takes a variety of roll sizes. |

The one I have now is the V3840 model....I was going to get the newest model a while back, was researching and studying each one....107barney and I discussed them and she bought the one I was also going to get.....then my microwave went out, my a/c went out, and then the extra fridge in the garage started acting loopy, so I had some major expenses and had to hold off on my updated Food Saver! You can get the bags in rolls on Amazon....thanks to 107barney for THAT information!! and they are a lot cheaper than the ones you order from Food Saver and they work just as well. You put the roll in the machine and then you roll out as much bag as you want and cut it off with the little slide cutter on the machine......you can custom make the correct size bag you need! Yes, you can freeze frozen stuff in the bags....just take it out of whatever you have it in now and put it in the Food Saver bag and suck the air out....the bag collapses tightly all around the frozen thing. I do my new born puppy milk formula that way. I make up a batch, freeze it in ice cube trays, then freeze 8-10 cubes in each Food Saver bag.....that way, I dont waste so much formula, as it is only good for a week in the fridge and when you have babies eating only a couple of cc's per feeding, there is a lot to discard at the end of a week! |

I order from amazon a lot too, I have prime so the 2 day shipping has me spoiled. I also use smile to donate to the yorkies. I'm thinking of ordering from kohls though, they have 3 models and I'll wait until they have good coupons and kohls cash. They also have a good return policy. |
I have a foodsaver. . . I love it |

Judy could be a sales rep for the Food Saver lol, it's all that she says. Meat can stay frozen in vacuum bag for one year. If you freeze veggie, fruit, anything that is not meat the bags are re-useable, just wash them, dry then reuse. The roll can be cut to size. |
I personally had no luck with the Food Sealer brand....and there was another brand I tried that was a disaster.....I will stick with the Food Saver brand! I upgrade every 3-4 years just to have the newest model, not because the machine I had was not working but because I want the jar attachment, or the soft food sealer so cookies dont crush, etc! I pass my "old one" down to my cousin.....she puts up hundreds of pounds of shrimp and crabs from the shrimp boats that dock in Kemah. I then buy my shrimp from her all year long....just because I dont have room in my freezer to put up a lot of shrimp, and I dont get down to Kemah to the boats very often.......!!! |
