Phobias To confirm: I did a search to see if this had been asked before but found nothing. Therefore, apologies if this is a previously addressed question! I am not claiming infallibility with respect to my search skills! A phobia is defined by www.dictionary.com as follows: a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it. Therefore, on the basis of the above definition, I fear the following in order of severity: failure flying butterflies, all other flying insects and birds when not contained What are your phobias? |
Elevators or any confined small space....Just the thought of being in a crammed elevator makes my heart race. Clowns....I have always hated clowns. |
Heights...UGH. I hate being near an edge! I dream a lot of falling, and oftentimes it's from an edge. But conversely, I LOVE it when I have flying dreams (where I'm just flying around wherever), those don't scare me at all bc I'm not actually falling. Fast, crawly bugs. I have a fear of airplane flying, but I wouldn't call it a phobia bc I still do it. But I hate it! |
Darkness-Pretty sure my house is the most lit up on any given night after the sun sets. Caves, because well... they may cave in or I might get lost! Confined spaces like closets, small showers, fully enclosed bathroom stalls, etc. Heights as in the St. Louis Arch and ferris wheels, but I love roller coasters. The Boogie Man. I still think he's under my bed at night. :D |
Snakes! |
:D 1) HEIGHTS....even on films or television, every single part of me aches from the waist down, with that awful tingling sensation on the base of my feet :( 2) Spiders....I'm sure they wave JUST ONE of their horrible spindly legs round the corner at me, the minute I've got in the shower :( 3) Clowns....always have hated their painted mask-like faces, and Steven King's 'IT' made it 100x worse :( xx |
Um, yeah IT was scary...lol Forgot to mention I have a paralyzing fear of cancer and I don't even know where that has come from because none of my family has ever suffered from cancer for as many generations as we can go back? |
Great subject .... For me, I hate flying, but do it anyway to get somewhere. I am fearful of crossing a busy street and falling on black ice, since I did it last year. I think all my fears have to do with a lack of control. |
Heights. I am terrified of sitting too high up at the Imax or at bleachers at ballgames. I have this strange fear that I will lose control of myself and tumble down the isle. Water slide tubes at White Water. When I go down them, I say loud and clear for all to hear "keep your head down, keep your head down!". I'm afraid if I forget and sit up resulting in hitting my head, passing out and drowning. The basement when I'm home alone. I know. I'm a baby, but I always get a little creeped out when I have to go down there. |

Also, toilets in pitch black darkness (like, getting up and going to the bathroom at night). When I was little, I always thought a monster would come up out of the toilet and get me....lol...and to this day, I occasionally think of that if I'm going to the bathroom in the middle of the night when it's really dark. |

Rethinking the phobia thing, I think my all time worst fear is public speaking or speaking in front of groups. I absolutely fear it so so much and according to the definition, will absolutely avoid it if I can. |

My other phobia is enclosed spaces like crowded elevators. |
Grasshoppers!--NASTY little buggers |

YES, let me add to that: locusts junebugs I hate junebugs with a passion..thanks mom!!!!!! I do blame her for this because she used to tell me, as I passed under our porch light at night, that junebugs would get stuck in my hair if I allowed them to land. WELL, who wants that to happen at age four!!!!!!!!!! Especially since she neglected to add, "But, it's not a big deal, Misty. They can easily be removed and can't hurt you, anyway...." Now, I'm going to email her with wrath regarding this memory. LOL |
Definitely fear locust, Don't know why but I am lol. I had one stuck on my kitchen screen Monday. I thought it was dead as the weather here has been under 32 degrees. I thought because it has been so windy, the wind blew it, and it got caught in the screen. For two days this big green thing was on my screen. I had thoughts of removing it with a paper towel and putting it in a jar, but the thought it may be alive I re-thought it. Wed. it was gone:eek:. There is no way the wind could have blown it off because its legs were entwined in the screening. I went out side to make sure it had not fallen on my deck, feared Cody the insect eater would eat it. It was no where to be seen. Sooooo it WAS alive those two days. I took pictures of this thing as this was the closet I have ever been to one. I know it is out there somewhere maybe close to my house and it's totally freaking me out lol. Fear of flying. I have flown 3 times in my life, I prefer to drive, soooo if there is water to be crossed and no bridge I don't go. How do those planes stay in the air. Yesterday I was driving, I was miles from the airport, a plane was coming in for a landing, OMG, it had slowed down and was descending, I was loosing my breath, going into panic mode, feared it was going to fall out of the sky, thank god the traffic started to move and the descending plane went out of my view, iyiyi, I HATE flying. When I was camping I feared having to crawl under my trailer, a bit phobic about being in tight places, always made sure someone was there to drag me out by my feet should I go into panic mode and loose my breath out of fear lol. Fear Freddy Kregger movies, will not watch. Ann has now added toilets to my list lol. |
Well I have a fear of new things like driving to new places and also change but I also take anxiety meds for that and it helps |

Camel back crickets! You cant kill them with bug spray and if you do spray-they jump AT you not away and they can jump really high. Ugly ugly. Terrified of them. |
Bless google search, Camel back crickets, creepy looking things. I haven't seen anything like that here in NE Pa. YET, sure hope I don't, if it jumps towards you, I will ad that to a list of phobia's and fears lol. I don't / won't kill crickets, I don't have many here, many one or two, I was thinking of buying some, set loose in my front yard, I love the sound of crickets, I think those pesty Robins eat the crickets. |

Oh GOD, the first time I encountered one of these I called my mom at WORK and made her drive OVER because she didn't believe my description. They are disgusting, horrid things!!!!! I read that a lot of soldiers who have gone to Afghanistan are freaked out by them since there are a lot of them in that area. I think if a SOLDIER is scared than I'm well within my rights to be scared, too..!!! Also, driving..yeah. It was hard to adjust to driving in the UK (steering wheel on different side as well as traffic) so I can relate to that fear... I think, though, my biggest fear is still failure with cancer as a near second. I ruminate over failing constantly and it keeps me awake some nights. I don't know what started this and I don't think anyone can tell me and I'm not sure how much the origins of the issue matter. I don't even know what my definition of failure is since I know that one must sometimes fail in order to succeed. All I know is that it sucks to be my own worst enemy and fear an abstract notion! Bleah! |

Snakes and flying, though I've flown all over and many of them 7+ hour flights and it gets better after several trips in a row, I'm still absolutely petrified of it, though medication or alcohol help just before to take-off. Used to fly from Houston to Dallas every Friday night for most of a year just to visit family and come back Saturdays or Sundays. But no amount of medication or alcohol could ever get me near a snake!!! |

Speaking of fear of performing, Dick Clark, the man who appeared before millions on TV, was very nervous when he came to Wrigley Field to sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th Inning Stretch. Almost all of the celebrities who were actors or singers were nervous nellies. The sports stars and other non-performers were the confident ones. |
Bees and Wasps, anything that buzzes and go sting and got ya! Don t mind snakes n other crawely things First time ever I had a very full blown panic attack on the Pennturnpike going through a tunnel. It was very very scarey, and all I could think of was, I can't lose it, and kill my hubby and doggies in the car. My vision tunnelled and I said to hubby talk to me about anything talk talk talk... I got through it, and immediately pulled over to the side of the highway, shook like a leaf for about 20 minutes// Going back I practised deep breathing with my hubby at the wheel, and I was fine. We realized the tunnels were constructed differently, going back a square shape with a white roof, going there a rounded shape with a black roof. Who the hell knew? I have never experienced that before! And do not want to again ever! |

Hm, I forgot about tunnels... I'm starting to feel like a neurotic mess..lol! |
Spiders, I can't stand it , my worst nightmare, I can't even stand them seeing them in movies, TV etc.. |
I'm not scared of snakes, bugs, or creepy crawlies for the most part.I'm also getting over my fear of snails and heights. We climbed to the top of the tallest temple at the Lamanai ruins Tues. What a spectacular view! What really gets me nervous is going up really step hills in a car. I don't know why but it really freaks me out. Going down is fine. Certain areas in San francisco is hard for me to visit lol. |
My phobias are: Water bugs (you know those huge black shiny cockroaches) and im very claustrophobic (i can turn into superwoman if i feel confined) Failure is a good one too... |
