A little help re: internet homepage please? I will share something about myself that is no secret to others who know me! In doing so, I really hope that you all could help and I would greatly appreciate your advice in advance. I am very sensitive to "negativity" regarding world events. I do not like to know every bad thing that happens as a result of humans wanting to hurt each other or humans wanting to hurt animals, etc. I feel that the news shoves all of the bad stuff in my face everyday and I cannot get any respite! I do not watch the news, for this very reason, but my home page has been set to Yahoo! since I was 18. I would like to know, therefore, if any of you have any suggestions for a homepage which isn't news related? Or, if it is news related, a site which shares the compassion, etc of humanity which I know exists... I know bad things happen in the world. I'm no spring chicken. But, I feel bombarded by negativity and it would be nice to switch my computer on in the morning and learn of something else besides death, murder, pain, etc. I have tried to filter the news delivered to me via the Yahoo! webpage but it is a very inefficient method as I continually have articles which bypass the filter because of the way they are coded etc. If you've read this, thank you very much!!!!!!!!! |
:) I've read it, and fully understand and empathise....but have no idea how to get round this problem. But as you know, there are many extremely computer savvy YT-ers, and I'm sure they'll be along to help, once 'their' day has started! :D xx |
I wouldn't know how to go about avoiding it either. If it's in the news, it seems to be plastered everywhere. I don't have tv service by choice, and don't subscribe to any newspapers, yet just by being online I am made aware of all the current news events whether I want to be or not. If any site asks "is this relevant to you" or "do you want to see items like this" I always check NO. I am constantly clicking the "I do not want to see this" on people's FB posts, and am often disgusted by what some people share, including close friends and family. I am extremely squeamish and don't want to see those images. |
1 Attachment(s) I may not understand your question completely, but cannot you just set your homepage to google? I use goolge chrome and my homepage is completely custom to where I like to go. This is a new avenue for me to because I was having so many problems with IE so I'm still learning it, but so far, I have liked the change. This is what I see when I log on to the internet. |

Hey, thanks for this suggestion! I think 18 years of habit blinded me to the obvious! I set my homepage to national geographic :D. Thanks so much xxx |

Thought it was only me and a weak disposition lol Well, thanks to Cha-chas suggestion above, I have set my homepage to National Geographic. If I want news, I have to actively seek it which is not likely to happen...YAY |

Your "homepage" can be anything you want it to be. It can even be Yorkietalk.com :D:p!! I like NatGeo too. Love the photography there. Google works for me because it allows me to store my "favorites" which are not really favorites, but work related sites I use regularly as tabs at the top and all I have to do is click the tab and I'm there so it's very customized to my needs/likes. Glad you found something you like!! |
My "homepage" is set to Google as well for the same reason. I skim through headlines on aol, yahoo, cnn, etc briefly to see what's going around in the world. |
I enjoy Huffington Post as there are many categories/sub titles that I always find some short piece of interest, and easy to avoid those I don't care for. One of my fav pages which could be a home page is Huff Post GPS for the Soul: Stress Relief, Relaxation, Meditation, Mindful Living Guidance - HuffPost GPS For The Soul |
I know just how you feel, I do not watch any news because of all the BAD news. I also use yahoo, I just delete their daily news. Cha Cha has an excellent solution, google chrome, I would have suggested that also. I see you found something, but, at least you have suggestions for the future should you need it. Enjoy your new home page. |
This is mine and its really really cool. I have used this since its inception, lots of neat stuff on it. Reference, Facts, News - Free and Family-friendly Resources - Refdesk.com I love the how to get a human directory, it works most of the time and it is updated regularly. |

Hi everyone! Wow, thanks for all the suggestions. Lynzy, you're amazing! I have set my home page now to three tabs to include the two you suggested in addition to NatGeo. I didn't even know I could do this before today. I felt really stupid asking about homepages etc but the question has definitely paid off...thanks you guys!!! Zen = restored. |
