McAfee and Norton or? I used Norton for several years no problem...McAfee for the last year hateeeeee it.......slows my laptop so bad etc... What do you use? Are there REALLY any free programs that work great? Thanks in advance... |
I use microsoft security essentials. I've been using it for years and it's free. Can't say that I personally have compared it to Norton or McAfee, my brothers the computer nerds did. They told me that side by side it offers the same protection and is free. No complaints here about that software. |
My brother has AVG and PCMatic....that PCMatic only costs him $50.00/month for 5 computers....he has 3 computers at home, so that worked out great for him. I have had AVG on my computers since my major crash ?? years ago, and it is working great for me. Before AVG, I had Norton and McAfee and they slowed my computers way down. That was what I had running when my computer crashed and died from viruses and things! |
Ditto about McAfee and Norton slowing my computer down. I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials since it came out and have had zero problems. No bogged down PC! About a month or two ago -- out of curiosity -- I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes and it found nothing. If you need to remove McAfee or Norton, it is a two step process. First, remove it through the add/remove program in your control panel. This removes MOST of the program, but both of those sneaky software companies leave little remnants behind that cause conflicts with your new antivirus software, IMO to make you think you need to go back to using their software. To get rid of that last little bit, you will need to go to their website and search for their removal tool (free download) and run it and that will get rid of those last pesky bits. |

Another vote for MS Security Essentials and . . . set up a user account on your computer that does not have admin privileges. Use that account for your daily computing/web surfing instead of the admin account. I have not had a single problem after going this route. McAfee brought me nothing but headaches. The only computer I ever lost to malware was one I was using McAfee on. A trojan took down the computer. The fees are too high and the program slows down the computer. |
Our family computer genius, my son in law, says Microsoft all the way. But, I guess he has to, he works for them. |

If anything tries to download and install, you will be prompted for your admin password. Much safer. |
I use Microsoft essentials also. I think having Norton is almost as bad as a virus. It slows everything down. |
Have used the Norton Internet Security package for years with no problems and don't find my computer is slower than with McAfee and no computer freezing up or bogging down. I don't use the Norton toolbar, though, thinking that would probably slow it down. |
Admin is always my go-to techy advice person - and he always recommends Microsoft Security Essentials....also likes Malwarebytes. |
Been using MS Security Essentials since I posted this....WOW absolutely no problems and my pc is back to its self! I've now installed it on both my computers. I just ran Malwarebytes for kicks and giggles NOTHING!!!! Thank you so much everyone!!! |
Awesome, glad to hear it's working out well for you! |
