Need Help With UPS For Continuing Wifi Service During Power Outage! I knew my wifi router/modem was AC powered but didn't experience lack of internet service until we had a two hour power outage today during a sudden storm. My old DSL modem was electric powered also so once we had any power interruptions, I was cut off from radar and weather coverage as the NOAA or other radio coverage is practically useless during fast-moving storms. Without local radar or TV weathermen breaking in to programming and showing you what's going on, you are cut off from vital information, what's going on or any information about when to expect power restoration as local TV endeavors to obtain from local electrical service providers. What device or other Uninterrupted Power Supply does everyone use that has an electrically-powered wifi router/modem? I need to get one of those devices but understand some are just junk while others work well and for a good amount of time. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. |
The first thing I would think of would be a power generator. There are differenty types (gas, battery, etc). But of course, those coat at minimum few hundred dollars. The one time I really needed electricity, I had a car power adaptor/inverter. Something like this: http://b.cdnbrm.com/images/products/...c_inverter.jpg I had to put together enough extension cord to make it long enough to reach where I needed. But it did the job. Is this type of things you're looking for? |

I understand there are UPS devices that plug into the wife router/modem that provide uninterrupted power to it - but the trick is to select a reliably good one and not just whatever the Best Buy sales team is recommending this month. I've read some of them are just junk and fail to work properly. |
Ups Hi Jeanie Still hassled with electronic stuff I see, LOL! As you say, Best Buy have some battery powered UPS systems for computers etc, low power output. (Around $45) I don't know if that is the kind of thing you are looking for? I am sure one of them would be good??? Or just Google Battery powered UPS? Good Luck :-) |
If I had a choice and the funds, I might get both the generator and UPS. The UPS is more designed for electronic use like computers, modems, etc. As for the generator, it'll be for everything. What if you had a craving for pizza and you didn't have electricity for the microwave?! LOL Hope you find what you're looking for! |

If you have a Smartphone or Ipad there is a NOAA Weather App that you can download for free. I'm sure there are also Android Apps for NOAA too. |

Ups On the Best Buy web site, under Battery Powered UPS, they are reviewed and some have good reviews. They can get expensive though! |

We use a battery backup for our office and home. Our security systems have cameras that we can view on our phone, from our networks, and I plug the modem into the battery backup so that if there's a power outage, we still have Internet and can still view our cameras from our phones or iPads. |

I have the same worries, we get pretty bad storms here and we need to keep up with the weather. I have an IPad with 4G cellular service and have found it works great in these cases. For me I just added the IPad to my exsisting cell phone plan but you can also do a pay as you use plan with must US providers. |
Don't know if this would help, but I use a MiFi ( that I got from Verizon). I keep it charge up and in my purse at all times. I can charge it from my car or my computer or a regular household socket. I pay for it by the month. I can use it anywhere - most recently during a long-wait vet visit where I sat in the car with my iPad for about 2 hours on line the whole time. Downside - don't use it to download things like movies because you will go over the allotted amount and get changed more. I even use it when the wifi goes down at work - I am always connected. What it costs me. Month is much less the upkeep on a generator and I can use it wherever I am. Just a thought! |
Thank you all so much for your ideas, which may not work for me now but will in the future, depending on what comes next in my tech trek. I don't really need a smart phone(screen way too small on even the largest made) or iPad all that much - maybe an iPad or tablet would be easier to surf the web but still I need a larger screen surface for now and plus - truth here - I don't want to go through setting one other technical product up, learning how to operate it and get it rolling! lol! But I am hoping I will run into someone who uses a somewhat long-lasting battery powered UPS that works well overnight - so far we only had an overnight outage once in recent years - and isn't just junk to power their electric wifi router/modem and home phone line. That seems the simplest way to go for me right now but I just need to know a good product/model that is reliable and there for you when you need it. I probably shouldn't have even looked them up online and read some of the comments from those seeking help on the online techie forums due to the wide variety of complaints and fear-mongering that goes in some of them about almost any product. Those guys don't seem to like anything 100%! From the two or three forum comments on Battery Powered UPS I read, you would think there wasn't one out there that really held up. I'll just keep asking around about what works for others who don't have smart phones/tablets. But I do thank all of you for all of your knowledge and help - you are all so far ahead of me! |
