I just looked up clematis. Beautiful! I haven't seen those in my nursery but I just checked and online said they would be good up to zone 9, which is what we are in. |
1 Attachment(s) Speaking of vines, this is my fall clematis. it is actually one thing I can't seem to fail when it comes to gardening. :D. I had to order this from an online nursery because our shops here don't carry this variety. |
Oh wow. Love that! What variety and what online seller? I may have to order online also. I haven't seen any in our local nurseries, and trust me, we are there weekly! When do they flower (and how many seasons until they flower)? What color is that one? |

I order through Spring Hill Nurseries online. |
Ok thanks for the tips. I'll take a look into it. My passifloras are not doing well. Maybe I will swap them out. We wanted them to grow up and over our patio cover. It hasn't really taken off. Last year (first year) they were growing like 6" per day. This year it's barely sprouting. It reached the top of the posts of the patio cover last year and it's still about the same now. |
Oh, so did I mention I have the world's worst black widow in my yard. She's made this HUGE web and has caught exactly nothing so far! Meanwhile I got bugs all over the yard. If she doesn't get something soon she's gonna starve. |

I have used honey with success. The problem is once I get them to root and I bring them outside the heat kills them. But yeah no need to buy rooting hormone if you already have honey in the house. As far as the black widow, I don't mind spiders at all--IF they do their job! Her web is in an out of the way place that the dogs can't get to (up high) but if she doesn't start catching something, she won't have to worry about me evicting her, she will die from starvation! She only comes out at night. I haven't tried my camera at night yet. Only one little light out back and I doubt it's enough to light up where she is. She's pretty fat though. So I'd assume she's eating something but her web is totally clean. Edit about the honey. I cut the bottom end into a point and dip it in honey, then put it directly in a small pot with dirt, water it, then put the pot in a clear produce bag and tie the top. |
I didn't realize I too could grow clematis here, as long as it's a Zone 9a clematis, cool! |
Well I found out what was eating my mint. I found three small caterpillars this morning. I wondered how big the bugger was bc not much was being eaten each day but I could tell something was nibbling on it. Out of spite I was cutting the mint totally back just so whatever it was wouldn't have anything to eat.....and I touched one with my bare hand by accident! At least it was a small one. I left two as an offering for the black widow. The last one for the birds. Didn't see the black widow last night. I bet she died already. |

I think without killing them the only thing you can really do is prevent the moths from laying the eggs in the first place. I've also read to pick them off by hand and drop them into soapy water but that kills them. I guess not as brutal as what I've been doing but I'm triggered by my anger of them. Lol. The large ones are from huge moths. I mean huge! I killed one a few weeks ago. Took about five smacks before he died. Wingspan about 3". They say you can put row covers on your veggies but for a large plant like bouganvea not possible, plus it's ugly. But that still doesn't solve the issue of the smaller ones. What I've been doing is putting out bird seed and hoping the birds patrol my yard. I love birds except pigeons. Only draw back is bird poop. That way the birds kill them not you. |
1 Attachment(s) Chocolate tomatoes....I have a 15ft row of various tomatoes....just hate posting pics when I need to reduce the image..:( |
Wow, I didn\'t know those existed! Almost looks like a tomatillo without the husk. You were right about my tomatoes. Miracle grow made a huge plant w no yield. So far I got three golf ball sized tomato and now the plant looks like it\'s yellowing and dying. :( at least I know for next year. |
