Facebook Fake Death/Identity Scam Just wondering if anyone else had gotten hoodwinked by Allie/Lucy Lu. In a nutshell a person using her dogs name for a page (Lucy Lu) friended me a month or two ago, since she was friends with a zillion other dog friends of mine I accepted, then I joined a sewing group she started. No biggie I did not have any interactions with her and my facebook page is mostly about Lola so friending all these dog pages is normal for me. A few days after I joined the sewing group I started seeing tons of posts on how she died, a few people were contacted or so they claim by her husband. People were alluding to how she was fighting cancer but was brave and did not complain about it. Well this Lucy Lu character apparently had tons and tons of followers, always posting inspirational stuff and photos of her pups, primiarly maltese. I have never seen such an outpouring of sadness, 100's of people posting how much she meant to them and how sad they were and how much they were crying. I posted something like wow sorry I did not have a chance to get to know her. Earlier this evening I started seeing posts how it was all a farce that someone made this person up, created her profile along with several other fake profiles. The fake Lucy Lu even started a popular Maltese page, I think it was called Spoiled Maltese (it's closed now). Some of these profiles were well past a year old and were very active. I realize this goes on, but normally one does it it's to pump their image up, but in this case it was a low key persona and they were posting very caring, kind and inspirational stuff. I find the whole thing very odd and am glad I did not follow her and get emotionally involved with this person like so many others had. I could not help but wonder if anyone else was a FB friend of "Lucy Lu" |
my husband and I are members of an offshore boating web site and there was a situation sort of similar that happened there. A user named Big Scottie started coming on strong posting about his cool boats, cars and his hot young wife Rachel, (who also became a member of the forum) Oh and he just let it slip that he was a former NFL player, made it like he was a real mover and shaker. A bunch of members were falling all over themselves trying to buddy up to him and Rachel. A lot of the web site members were getting ready to go to Key West for the big offshore boat races and we were having a huge party down there. EVERYONE wanted to meet Big Scottie, one of the gals I was friends with sort of blew me off because she was "going to be hanging with Big Scottie". About 4 days before we left for Key West Big Scottie started a post Rachel is dead, apparently there was some sort of car wreck and Big Scottie poured his heart out with details of her deathbed scene. Just after I arrived in Key West I got word that Big Scottie was a farce, he was some sort of fat out of work security guard, mooched off people and owed people a bunch of money and had pulled this scam on a motorcycle forum before. He actually came back on the web site groveling and apologizing how he was sick (in the head) and needed help. This story always reminded me of the Brad Paisley song Everything is better on Line |
It's called Catfishing...... But I have a question about the Spoiled Maltese. I'm not sure how I even started getting these Spoiled Maltese emails because I don't even own a true Maltese just a Morkie. It was just recently that I get some type of Spoiled Maltese email but I was deleting them. |
Urban Dictionary: catfish catfish A catfish is someone who pretends to be someone they're not using Facebook or other social media to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online romances. Did you hear how Dave got totally catfished last month?! The fox he thought he was talking to turned out to be a pervy guy from San Diego! or I was really falling for that gorgeous gal on Facebook, but she turned out to be a catfish. |
Yes you are right they call it catfish, they have had TV shows about it. I saw a Dr. Phil show where a woman pertended to carry a baby as a surrogate for someone. The couple was taken for over $50 grand, it was heartbreaking to watch as the couple finally learned the truth. I am not 100% sure if the name was spoiled maltese, it was something like that but I will ask someone I know. |
I'm almost positive that's what the email I was receiving called it/ |
