How to get rid of ants safely? We have a major ant problem. How to get rid of them or deter them w/out using raid or anything bad for the dogs? I've been using coffee grinds, only on the counter by the sink bc that's where I saw ants. Now they're not there anymore, it's been a couple of days & still no ants, it really works (but it looks messy)! I can't use it outdoors (bc it gets windy sometimes) or on the floor bc I don't want the doggies to sniff it or anything. Any suggestions that work (loll) much appreciated! |
We've had a lot of ant problems the past few years. I'm not sure about brands because I don't buy or use the stuff but I have a general idea. We use ant traps on the counters and in other places Lola can't get, like this Shop PIC Indoor/Outdoor Metal Ant Traps at Lowes.com Lawn spikes out front and out back, Lola only goes out on a leash so I just keep her away. ![]() And we use some kind of spray out front, Lola doesn't go out there. |
I've used cedar oil by cearcide for years. It's safe around dogs, it can even be lightly sprayed on them to kill or deter fleas. It does have to be resprayed every so often since it is an oil. I keep a quart around at all times and I have a couple of little spritzer cans too. This is what I use... Best Yet - Organic Pest Control Insecticide by Cedarcide : CedarCide |
I haven't tried this myself but my neighbor said she put basil & mint around her kitchen and the ants were gone. Sort of off topic but your post reminded me of this: |
I've heard ants won't cross over a chalk line or cucumber skin peels. I haven't tried it, so I don't know how well it works. |
I don't know about any natural way to get rid of them. I had a problem with them at our home before we moved. I ended up having to call an exterminator. They "smoked" out the queen. Once she is gone, the ants are gone. He told me they would keep coming back as long as she was still there. She was huge! |
Tea tree oil in the corners of doors and windows. But it uiss poisonous to humans/animals in certain amounts so I wouldn't do that. Also if you use a corn meal/powdered sugar combo. Ants are drawn to the sugar take it back to the hive/nest along with the meal. When they ingest the meal they're unable to break it down and causes them to implode. |

When we moved into a new house, we had a problem with ants and used the boric acid bait method. It worked great. Mix powdered boric acid with peanut butter and honey. Cut a plastic straw into 1 inch lengths. Load up a syringe with the bait mixture and fill up the straw sections. Unscrew electrical plates (for plugs and light switches) and drop the bait filled straw sections in between your walls. Works great, and your pets can't get to the bait. The ants did come back about a year later and we had to treat again, but since then it's been over 6 years and we haven't seen any ants. |

Thanks for all the great ideas! Will need to try them when I get a chance...I bought a natural insecticide that's safe for children & pets, from Home Depot, will try that 1st. Hopefully that will take care of the ant problem outside. |

This is a great idea . . thanks !! We have fought with ants for years and years now. There is a massive colony on our property that stretched the length of our driveway up our sidewalk and even into our garage under the asphalt and cement. Its driving me nuts. They are in our cabinets, in our dog food, cereal, coffee creamer, sinks and in any crevices they an hide in. I've pulled apart out drawers, counter tops, behind the stove and fridge and have sprayed and sprayed and still there they are. I pour a drink and set it on the counter and 10 mins later it crawling with ants. Those little sob's even find there way into my computer room and crawl on me.....IM Going NUTS ! Whew Rant Over . . |
I use St. Gabriel food grade dichotomous earth. It's safe for use around pets. |
I just read that ants don't like cucumber. So they said to put cucumber peels or slices in a little bowl near where they come in. But down side is you have to change them out daily bc of spoilage. |
