Vacumn Sealers Hi, I have a tiny Yorkshire that only eats 4tbs of dry food a day and he is on a prescription dry dog food. The smallest bag they sell is 6 lbs and since it is only good for no more than 6 weeks after it is opened I would like to know if anyone here uses the vacumn sealer they sell to keep some of the dry food so it can all be used and not wasted by having to throw away most of the bag. If so what does anyone use? I have been looking at them but still cannot make a decision. I have no room in my freezer or refrigerator as it is small and I read that you can keep the dry food for longer by vacumn sealing a week's worth in each bag. I would appreciate your advise and help with this. Thank You. Silver Lace |
I have had a vacumn sealer since my brother bought me one for Christmas almost 10 years ago! I LOVE it! I have bought 3 since then, getting newer models as they come out! I have the Food Saver and use it for everything from Thanksgiving meals all year long, to dog food treats , etc, all year long! Highly recommend this "kitchen accessory"....best money I have ever spent! |
Yorkie Mom, I want to thank you for answering my post. If I understand what you wrote, the one you use is called,'Food Saver",right? Thank you again. |
I have a food saver vacuum sealer. I just have the cheapest/simplest model and I use it all the time for anything and everything from pre-made dinners to dehydrated vegetables. I also don't know if it's recommended, but I do reuse the bags 2-3 times. I'm careful to put back in them what I originally had in them though. |
Hi ChaCha, Thank you so much for answering my post. Do you think it would work well to vacumn seal dry dog food? That is the only thing I am interested in it for. I appreciate your telling me what you use very much. Food Saver brand you said, right? |

I want to thank you again for your response. Do you vacumn seal your dry dog food? This is the only reason I want to buy a vacumn sealer. I don't use all of it in the 6 weeks that it is only good for after the bag is opened. I don't have room in my freezer or refrigerator to keep any. I read that you can vacumn seal a week's worth in every bag you seal and that alone will keep the food fresh longer. I can vacumn seal about half or so and keep the rest in the bag and all the food should stay fresh and I won't waste any that way. That is my idea on it,anyway. I had to throw away half a bag of his prescription food as it was past the 6 weeks time period and I don't want to keep wasting it like that. He doesn't eat that much at a meal and it would take a long time to empty the 6lb bag. Too bad it does not come in a smaller size. Again, thank you for your help and advice. Silver Lace |
I do not vacuum seal my dog food, but I don't see any reason why you couldn't. My parents have an attachment that vacuum seals jars. If I were going to keep dog food like that, I would likely invest in one of those attachments and keep the dog food sealed in a jar. But, I don't see any reason why the bags wouldn't work too. Good luck. |
Thank you so much ChaCha for responding again. I appreciate your time and input so very much. New things always throw me and since I have never used this item for anything ever it confuses me. If I had used it like you use it then I could probably thought about using it on my own. Your thoughts that it should work really make me feel easier on using one after I get one. |
