EMG test for Carpal Tunnel....
 
UGh... Ive been having so much pain in my wrists, hands and now my right elbow. I can't put any pressure on my fingers w/o feeling it in my wrists. About 20 years ago I was diagnosed with tendonitis in both wrists and my elbows. Today I went for an EMG test with a neurologist and the tests for Carpal Tunnel came back negative. I am relieved, but also bummed. Still no idea what is causing the pain. Doctor said there was a 5-10% chance it could still be Carpal tunnel, but he doubts it. I'm also being tested for hypothyroidism, which could cause the pain.

Has anyone had a negative EMG test and still had carpal tunnel, or more tests and got a diagnosis of some kind?

EMG test is basically shocks to your nerves in your arms, and gauge the response time of your nerves. They also put thin needles into 5 muscles of your arm to test their response. Its not a pleasant test, but its not unbearable either.

My test came back neg... and was told they were not sure what caused my pain.... I later found out that my B12 stays low so after weekly shots I dont have the problem as much EXCEPT when my herniated disc are bugging me soooo maybe might be worth testing your B12?!?!?!

When vitamin B12 levels are low, you experience side effects resulting from demyelination, destruction of the nerve cell’s outer coating. Nervous impulses become slower and chronic nerve pain symptoms of painful tingling, burning, and numbness become more frequent as the protective layer of your delicate nerve fibers slowly corrodes.

Thanks for this info. The tests came back neg. I started taking B12 about 3 weeks ago everyday. So I guess I'll see how my arms/wrists/elbows feel in a month or so. I hope BETTER!

No prob... I know it helped me tons... granted I still have 2 herniated disc in my neck that my insurance will not pay to have replaced.... but I will start that battle again after my knee surgery tomorrow :p

So far doing good... Getting bored of sitting around and sucks that I can not hold the baby but other than that I am doing good.

So good to hear that but must be so hard to not be able to hold the baby. Do as the Dr. says though, it will pay off.

My daughter-in-law is having the same problem and hope the B12 helps. She may have to have surgery.

I am still taking B12 daily and I stopped lifting the heavy heavy weights I was doing. I am starting to feel better all together. Still get numbness in my fingers though. Doctor does not seem concerned though. Good Luck to your daughter in law. I hear its not that horrible anymore.

EMG & NCS Studies
 
I am sorry for your pain. I completely understand. I had an EMG/NCS study done on my lower left leg. Won't go into the details leading up the the EMG/NCS 'cause I don't want to hyjack your thread. The test hurt like hades! Not only was I electrocuted, I was used as a convenient pin cushion for all those long thin needles! OUCHies!!

Anyway my tests came back positive. I had a tarsal tunnel done in early 2008 after my initial tib/fib bone explosions. It worked miracles. Now six years and 4 surgeries later I have an abundance of scar tissue and yet another tarsal nerve entrapment. It seems likely that the nerve is entrapped in the scar tissue. Options are surgery which will cause yet more scar tissue or theraputic massage to help break up the scar tissue. Needless to say I'm going to try the massage first.

Wishing you the best of luck. Try massaging the painful area. It hurts like - well - bad word - but it may help.

Oh that sounds terrible. The test was not brutal for me at all.. .maybe it was the location. I mean the electrocutions felt funny... but the needles didn't really hurt at all.... just left me with pinpoint size bruises all over my arm. HAHA

Sounds like you've been through torture though. I hope your pain goes away soon!

I wore those wrist gloves for carpal tunnel and it went away. You may want to try those. The kind with the Velcro that wraps around your wrist and the hands are kept in one position. I hope you get some relief.

Oh do I hate EMG ! I have had 4 and waiting for the 5th to be approved . . . . So not a fan.
