Would you change your hair style for a job interview? I have a friend who wears her hair in braids, twists, and other natural styles. She is concerned that her hair style may prevent her from getting a job. I thought that question was interesting. What do you think? |
I don't think hair style matters is job search / interview. It's your qualifications for the job that matters, not your hair style. Now if she had purple or that red kool aid color hair, I would say change it, or body piercing on her face (lip, tongue, eye brow) that may affect a job interview. IMO hair style no. Good luck to your friend. She will decide what the best thing for her is. |
I love dying my hair with purple & platinum streaks... but if I am looking for a job, I'll have it all one dark, natural brown color. I'll gauge the company and atmosphere and so far, Ive been able to re-streak it once I start a job. But yes.... I'll do anything to look as professional as possible while interviewing. As long as her hair is clean and neat, I'm not sure they would hold it against her in an interview,.... and honestly if the company is so uptight that you can't be yourself, does she really want to work there? |
Some corporations have an "image" they want to be representative of their firm. Some want a very professional look and others more laid back. I would consider where the company you are interviewing with falls in that spectrum. Right now many folks are looking for jobs and it is very competitive. |
It shouldn't affect wether or not she get's hired but it could. I think your friend will be okay for the most part, but shouldn't do something too exciting too ya know? Mostly what I've done is gone and checked out how other employees present themselves and styled myself similarly. I'm African American, and I think the most common cases usually deals with the guys who wear afros, dreads, and braids. For women it's not that big a deal unless she has unnatural colors. |

totally agree |
Great responses! I just read them to her. I agree with all of the above. |
The first impression (positive or negative) is always very important. And that first impression comes when your interviewer first steps into the room and sets eyes on the interviewee. Depending on the type of job you are interviewing for, a "funky" hair style may give the impression of not being serious or of being someone who doesn't show proper respect. If it were me, I would definitely dress and groom conservatively for an interview and test the waters as far as dress/grooming after I was established in the new job. |

I'm not sure why the hair style is that important. Most of the people I work with have big, visible tattoos. Most of them had the tattoos showing when they were hired. I've been told this is the norm for people and anyone who doesn't like it should get used to it. And we do have people that come in with hair that isn't the norm and they still get hired. I think if the company likes your qualifications, they will hire you. However, this is not how it was 25 years ago when I applied for the job I have now. |

It definitely matters at some places. We are prohibited from coloring our hair with an unnatural color. If I went in with pink streaks they would not have appreciated it. There is also strict control of visible piercings. My hair is straight and boring. I usually wear a headband but sometimes wear pigtails. These make me look like a 7th grader. While I may wear them at work I would not have gone to an interview like that. I see nothing wrong with interviewing with a neat, professional twist or braid. |
