Actually, it's not hard to believe at all and I didn't want to leave you thinking I was a nutcase thinking the moon would grow. ;) I think people generally realize the moon doesn't grow or enlarge itself when it's lower on the horizon and downsize when it rises higher up - we generally only speak in perceptions or how things appear to us - not factually. When I told Christinee the October blood moon would be lower and larger, I gave her credit for automatically understanding the moon wasn't going to somehow grow larger when it was low in the sky - just that it would appear that way when she saw it in an orbit lower on the horizon. That's all I meant.

Obviously the moon doesn't grow, but I always thought it was an atmospheric effect distorting the image of it so that the image really was larger when it had to go through more air. Sort of like the real effect where light gets redder going through more air. I was shocked to find out that huge moon is all in our heads.

No, that wasn't my understanding of what was happening myself. I'd just always thought it was human perception in relation to earthly objects, probably because we were taught that in science class as kids. And as a curious kid, I did my own measuring to prove the size was uniform from early evening to later one summer night.

Who is ready for the full lunar eclipse on October 8th? This one happens from 5:27 AM until 6:22 AM my time (CST), so much better to wake up a little early to see it this time as opposed to staying up until 3:00 AM like the last one.

Looks like you'll have to get to a highpoint with a clear view West if you're in the Eastern US, but for those of us in the Central US all the way West to Japan it should be really easy to see the full lunar eclipse if the weather cooperates.

Woohoo as I am an early bird, I get to see up to full lunar eclipse. Starts 4 32 am. Going to go to our local hill with camera and tripod and even dog in tow to watch it! Yes !

Sounds like a plan! It'll be just high enough in the sky so I can watch it from my front yard.

Your best bet is to catch it early, about 6:27AM on the morning of October 8th. You will need a clear view West since the moon will only be 11.6 degrees above the horizon at that time. Best to view it from a hill if possible, as 11.6 degrees isn't much. An easy way to estimate this is to take your arm and stretch it out straight in front of your face and put the bottom of your fist at the horizon. The top of your first is then about 10 degrees above the horizon. If you stick your three fingers out like a Boy Scout salute that subtends about 5 degrees, which is a little less than the height the moon will be above your horizon at 6:55 AM when the eclipse is at its maximum. One nice thing about the moon being low though is that it will look huge due to an illusion in our minds where the moon looks way bigger low on the horizon than high.

Still, as long as you have a clear view west it will be super easy to see the eclipse even at 11.6 degrees above the horizon at 6:27AM. Back in March 2013 I could see Comet Pan-Starrs naked eye at 10 degrees above the horizon with a much brighter sky (30 minutes after sunset) so the moon will be no sweat as long as you have a clear view West unobscured by trees, buildings, or hills.

OK, eclipse is early tomorrow morning. Unfortunately I think I'm going to miss it as humid air from the Gulf has come in the last couple of days, which makes nights and early mornings completely clouded over.

I am ready here if I can just wake up around midnight Hawaii time. We are having some haziness too, due to "vog" (volcanic fog), so I'm not sure how clear it will be.

So it is a "Blood Moon". This site has more info about it all and time in different zones, probably way TMI for most of us, but perfect for "yorkiefan_" :D

Argggghhhh, I hate our weather!!! Sky was clear last night when I went to bed at 11. Woke up at 1 and briefly looked out the window and saw complete cloud coverage. Ah hell. Went back to sleep and got up at 3:30 and it was mostly cloudy, but there were plenty of pockets of open sky, and I hoped against hope it'd be visible. Figured I'd sleep until 4:18 for the start, but didn't wake up until 5:30 once the full eclipse had just started. Of course completely clouded over 100%. Slept until 6:15 and it was still 100% clouded over (full eclipse ended at 6:22). So of course by 8:00AM the sky is blue again, as if to taunt me. F@#%!!! Lol

I'm so mad at myself. Woke up early to feed the doggies, looked out the window and we had nice clear skies. Went to brush my teeth with the intention of watching the eclipse afterwards . . . got sidetracked and FORGOT!! Missed it. :(

I got to see the eclipse here in Central Texas! There were lots of clouds moving through our area but I caught a glimpse of it in between clouds. It was an amazing beautiful red color.
