Sweet Gum Tree?? 1 Attachment(s) I did some searching to find out what these prickly balls are that are all outside and I think they are the 'fruit' from a sweet gum tree. I am trying to look up how safe they are with out much luck. Molli eats these ALL the time, I can't stop her, they are all over the ground and she loves to chew them. Should I be worries?? Anyone else have problems with their pets eating these prickly balls?? |
OMG! Those things are sharp! She EATS them??? http://www.bellarmine.edu/faculty/dr...n/sweetgum.asp Not poisonous! |
Yes, you should be very concerned. I am surprised Molli has not ended up with a bleeding mouth or serious digestive problems from the sharp thorns. The sharp pieces could also get lodged in her gums and cause a dental emergency, as happened to another member's pup with the little stalk of a green bean. We have tons of sweet gum in Virginia, including a few in our yard. I rake up the prickly seed balls regularly and throw them in the trash. When we encounter the seed pods on our walks, I say "sticky balls!" and the dogs jump back to the sidewalk. I don't want them to injure their paws walking on them. |
I'm surprised she eats them too- Chibi has never shown interest. She knows 'leave it' problem is she often gets one in her mouth before I even see it. She will not 'drop it' unless I bring treats with me, I tore one out of her mouth this morning but she was not letting it go. They are all over the place so I am not really sure how we can avoid them. She has been more 'burpy' lately, I thought she was having acid reflux but then I realized its been more in the last couple weeks when these balls are on the ground and she has been eating them. |

Well I think this needs to be moved to the sickness section. It's 6am and woke up to her throwing up pieces of these balls. I would have never thought of a green bean as dangerous, that's scary! At least they don't grow outside though. She will pick up these little balls as she is sniffing the ground, they are littered on the sidewalk and grass. This is my new least favorite tree :( |

If these seed balls are on your walking route, put her on a 4 ft leash. Walk her alone and keep your eyes on her mouth. If she goes for a seed ball, give her the "No" command and lift up on the leash if necessary -- just enough to get her mouth away from the ball. If all else fails, you may need to put a muzzle on her to prevent her from eating the balls. If the seed balls are in your yard, start raking, daily if necessary. |

if it were a tree in my yard I would, sadly it is trees around my apartment so I can't really chop those down. I am currently trying to find alternate walking routes that doesn't cross these trees. She seems ok now, still pooing out pieces of it. I can always count on Molli to keep me on my toes  |
