Anyone a personal trainer? I'd love to get more information about this professions and job opportunities. I teach full time and love it but I also love fitness and helping others stay it so I wonder if I could do to part time. Thoughts and experience welcomed!! |

I don't know too much about doing it as a career, but I have thought about it myself. (Of coarse, I'd need to get in better shape first:rolleyes:) But I love learning about health and fitness, so it would probably be something I'd enjoy. IF you don't get any real feedback here and If you are a part of a gym, maybe ask on of the personal fitness coaches there? I am sure they would give you some good tips. Then come back here and fill us in :) I'd love to hear. I've even done google searches on it before. |
I know my gym has personal trainers and I've been working with one for over a year now, 3x a week. I know what we pay for the sessions does not go to the trainer, only a VERY small portion of it, so the schedules are brutal (clients at 5am, and clients at 8pm on the same day) plus weekends, the pay stinks (we had 3 different trainers in less than a year, who all left because they just didn't get enough pay). But our trainer now, he LOVES it, of course he's only 23 and fresh out of college, I don't know how he'll feel in 10 years. I think it's a labor of love, you are certainly not going to make a lot doing it but if you love it, you'll enjoy it and a little extra cash won't hurt! |
my best friend is one, we started using a trainer about 6 years ago, she stuck with it then started working for them part time and got training free while she studied for the test. Then she started working for 24 hour fitness and slowly built up a private practice. Now she is completely on her own and supports herself with it. In order to make a lot of money you need to have a LOT of clients. The downside is the crazy hours, she works very early mornings, like 5 to 7 am and then often has a lot of free day time, then she works again in the evenings and then again on Sat and Sun. Let's face it the majority of people that hire trainers work a M-Friday daytime work schedule, so you have to be available when they are. If you have a lot of evenings and weekends free you most likely could make a go of it. I would talk to the place you work out and other gyms in your area to see if they would hire you part time if you got your certification. I will say my friend is extremely happy with her life and has never looked back. She was lucky when she started she was married to an auto exec so she was not starving and had health insurance, now she is able to support herself, but since her divorce does not have health insurance and choose not to spend her money on it, LOL contrary to what Obama would like us to think, health insurance is not easier or cheaper to get now, but as a teacher you would not need to worry about that. |
