:eek: Last night my daughters year old Italian Greyhound got out the door and right in the path of a skunk. Here's the home remedy that a univ. has online to get rid of the smell. Usually we have these in our homes on hand. Well, maybe not the qt. of hydrogen peroxide, I know I don't either. It was 10:30 pm last night when she called to pick up the peroxide I had because the stores were closed by then.

Make a mixture of 1 qt. hydrogen peroxide (3%)
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 teaspoon of mild tearless shampoo

Mix all together and rub into the hair/fur of pet
let it stay on for about 3 minutes then rinse.

Don't keep this mixture on hand, use all that you mixed.

They claim it works better than tomato juice/ vinegar mix, etc,
and according to my daughter, her IG is good as new, smell is gone. :)

That's good to know! We have skunks around and I fear Higgins getting sprayed. We usually don't let him out at night.....we also have big owls and I don't want one to swoop down and grab him up....

Back to skunks: My groomer told me that in "grooming school" they taught them to use a feminine douche powder mixture. Haven't had to try it yet, so no testamonial here.

About 20 years ago, I had a beloved dog named Raggedy Ann, part poodle, part terrier. She spent most of her time hanging out with the two raccoons and one female skunk who lived under the house next door to us. They were REALLY friends. And it was lots of fun to watch them all together. But then, the little lady skunk found a hunky skunk and had two babies. And she did NOT want any of her friends playing with her kids and used to let 'em all have it on a regular basis. I spent most of my food budget on tomato juice that summer. Fortunately, we lived right on Long Island Sound so I used to take her down to the beach and bathe Raggedy there. Since Lady Skunk had several arguments with the raccoons and Raggedy under their house, the neighbors had to move out for a month while the crawl space was descented. Animal Control removed the skunk to a local forest.......

I used to have a pet descented skunk named "Arpege." Skunks do NOT make good pets. They keep you up all night, grow attached to only one person, and are pretty firm and painful biters. I do not recommend them. Arpege, escaped through our dryer hose vent which she uncovered somehow. Have no idea how she made out in the wild, felt badly for her, but I didn't miss her much.

We also made friends with a wild skunk we named Mortimer. He used to hang out right by our door, sitting patiently on our porch. We couldn't go in or out without him raising that tail and threatening to spray. So we gradually "talked" to him and let him know that he was welcome and that we wouldn't hurt him. He hung around all summer. Even wanted to come IN the house, but we never allowed THAT! He never sprayed our dog (Chihuahua) or cat (Maine Coon), but they never threatened him either......

Good serum, Yorkie24U! I didn't know skunks could be pets! I've actually never seen a skunk in person, granted I'm a cityboy and really don't go out camping or anything...

Wish I had that formula yesterday!! We met a really nice couple while at a State Park who had one of the most beautiful big golden labs I have ever seen ... couldn't wait to go over and say hello, just to pet the dog! :) That was the smelliest dogs I have ever met ... I mean REALLY, make you want to throw up smelly!! :eek: My husband and I had to [as tactfully as possible] rush back to our trailer and wash our hands .... TWICE!!! The dog stayed inside with the couple!! :confused: They were nice, clean looking people but that poor dog reeked!! We talked to them several times but it was really hard for me to touch the dog .... I felt so sorry for him!! :(

Dogs can smell like a pile of vomit when they have ear infections. And lots of Labs and other "water" dogs get ear infections because their ears fold over and never get really dry. Our English Setters got infections occasionally and you just about had to move out of the house with that smell!!! I finally got a solution from the vet that I used in their ears every day. Then found out that clear distilled vinegar mixed half and half with water and used to wipe out their ears kept infections at bay. Bacteria won't grow in an acid environment.

'Course the setters smelled like a Ceasar salad........ ;)

Thanks, Mary Ellen!! That vinegar thing is good to know! Sadly, I always approach strange dogs under the chin ... that smell wasn't coming from his ears ... that smell was his coat! Pat said he smelled like "road kill"!! :eek: Been thinking about him all day :( and how I would have loved to have brought him over to our outside shower and whipped out that Coat Handlers and shampooed him three times and then brushed him!! :p He was just so gorgeous!!
