Board members? Is anyone a member of a Board of Directors? If so, what are your experiences with being on them? I am contacting a few not-for-profit organizations in the city to tell them I am interested in sitting on their boards should a spot become available. I am particularly interested in our local Humane Society, and hope that they'll have something available in the next year or so. Anyone else involved with an organization's board? |

What about the Chamber of Commerce for the city you reside in? Attend acouple Chamber meetings and get the scoop on the businesses in the City. That may be a good way to network yourself. Not sure if you can do it as an individual though. I attended Chamber meetings because I represented the bank I work for in that City. It's worth a shot though. Just get your face out there and make yourself known! Or some 'town hall' meetings. You can get to know a lot of people by attending town halls and Chamber meetings. Good luck! |
I am on the Finance Board for our Church. Yes, the Catholic church has board of Directors over Finance. I was actually aproached by the Monsignor, turns out they needed a woman on the board. However, they do take names for a waiting list then it has to be approved by the Monsignor and the board when there is an opening. Good Luck. I think the humane society is a great choice. |
I think it's great that you want to do this! I have never sat on a Board, but my mother has. She has sat on 4 Boards and from my experience, people choose their board members based on the money they can bring into the organization OR the intellectual chops they can bring to the table...based on the type of organization. This is soley based on my experience though...some organizations that you are looking at may be different. I know that my mom was chosen to be on one of her Boards after many years of volunteering for an organization. Volunteering is a good way to get on board and work with an organization you feel passionately about. Good Luck! |
