Buckle them UP!!!! I can't emphasize this enough....Hubby and I were on our way to visit family in Michigan and were involved in an accident. We ALL were buckled in (Yes, Shelby Seymour and Seeger, too)... when someone in on-coming traffic made a left turn in front of us. Of course, my Rav4 took the brunt of the impact but we are safe!!!!! We hadn't gotten too far from home, so a good friend pick us up (with all our packages and luggage) and brought us home. I can't imagine what the results could have been if we didn't buckle up!!! TAKE NOTE ALL YOU TRAVELERS!!!!! Keep those babies safe!!! |
There are car seats out there made just for dogs!!! Snoozer Car Seats!!! Check them out!! |
Oh, I am so very sorry about your accident. Your vehicle is so beautiful and have had fun riding in it to dog shows. At least that was the only thing hurt, thank heavens. So glad you had the pups and humans buckled up. And that everyone is okay! I remember many years ago talking to you at a dog meet-up about keeping dogs safe by buying something like a lookout seat. You were the one that encouraged me to do this. And we did. Hugs to you my friend and please give your three and your DH a gentle hug from us too. |
So glad you are all safe. |
So glad everyone is safe!!!! |
Oh my goodness! Glad you're all ok. I am confessing something bad. I haven't been buckling mine. I really don't want to put them in a carrier/cage because Anna is terrified of being put in a cage. So, what would work best for 2 dogs? One is 5 lbs and one is 6. |
Oh Wow! Glad it all ended well except for the car! I am fanatical about Cali being buckled in and you experienced my worst fear. Glad all are well - did you make it to your destination? Your safety consciousness really saved the day. I have a police officer friend who tells of dogs and children who are not bickered in becoming "missiles" in the car during an accident. Be safe and have a Merry Christmas! |
Very good reminder. So glad everyone was/is okay! |

Thanks... |
I am so glad no one was hurt, but what a scary experience. My 3 are always in a crate and the crate buckled in the seat. But a great reminder to everyone. I hope you can still have a good holiday. |

How scary! Glad to hear you are all safe :) What a great reminder to always keep our pups buckled up for their safety. I've seen a few FB posts this month about people's dog getting loose during/after a car accident. There was a rollover accident at the freeway exit nearest my house, and a little dog got loose. Thankfully he was wearing a collar with his owners info on it, was found, and made it home safely after 5 days. All I kept thinking as I was sharing the post, was why wasn't he strapped in??? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=1&theater |
Great reminder... so glad you all are okay! |
Wow I am so glad all of you are safe. Thanks for posting that reminder. I have one of the snoozer seats. Even if I just go to the vet who is 5 mins away I always put him in his seat with his BB on. Hugs to you and your family |
Huey is always in a car seat when riding with me alone. Rarely, on extended trips when dh is driving, I will hold him in my lap for a bit, but I do understand the dangers of this. I have a snoozer-type elevated seat for Huey and it has a little attached tether, but I know for a fact that it would take very little for that tether to break/pull loose, so I don't use it. I DO wrap his leash around the seat of the car & lodge it firmly under the headrest, leaving turning around/lying down room for Huey but short enough that he cannot be thrown in to the windshield or floor. His leash is always attached to a well-fitting harness that distributes pressure evenly across his torso. He really doesn't seem to like this seat as well as he did his old cheap, flimsy basket-type seat that finally self destructed. I think he felt safer all tucked down in that as opposed to the much more shallow snoozer. There was a thread in the past that was very informative about car seat safety for pets: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ar-travel.html |
Thanks again for sharing your story. Ordered our car seat last night. It is a two seater. I told the dogs we would go driving around to see Christmas lights when it gets here. They are very excited. I overheard Barney asking Anna if they would see Santa:). I am oddly very excited. Can't wait to take them for a ride somewhere other than the vet's. |
This is such an important reminder. I've read of several accidents lately where the dog got spooked and took off. The most recent was a MS family travelling through Montgomery, AL and on their way to GA for Thanksgiving. A miracle happened and the baby was found 13 days later. However, there are many more like this. Also, not just accidents. There is someone searching for their German Shepherd, Trooper. This person had pulled over on the side of the interstate to switch drivers and Trooper jumped out. I have plenty of people that make fun of me for putting Mandie in a carseat, but if it means my baby doesn't go thru a windshield, get spooked and take off, or such...those people can make fun of me all they want. |
I really need to look into getting a Snoozer. I had a Solvit one and it just wasn't very good. It didn't sit well in the seat and kind flopped around. Plus Uni did not like being restrained. I guess I would have to train her to tolerate it. |
I just realized I still have a wholesale account open with Snoozer if anyone is interested. I think I will go and order one for Uni. |
Very scary! I'm glad you and your babies are all okay. A very good reminder to secure the pups, and humans. I never go without a seat belt. |
Glad you're all ok, it could have been a disaster. Merry Christmas to you and your family. |
I'm glad you are all safe and unharmed. Katie has a Snoozer Luxury Lookout in a size medium that would easily fit two Yorkies. |
Glad everyone was ok. Good to remind all of us the buckle them up. |
Good reminder! If your on a budget hey often sell car seats at tjmaxx for pretty cheap. Glad everyone is ok. |
Thank goodness you are ok!!! I am an offender of not having my babies buckled up. I need to do that. I tried car seats and Dexter within 3 minutes ate through the strap and was hanging himself in the backseat. When we are not going far we do not buckle them..... but when we are going far we put them in their hard sided crate in the backseat. I think I'm just going to keep them in the crate now for car rides. Fletch loves it so much, sticking his head out the window. |
So glad to hear that you are ALL safe. I have a loop, with a big clip on it, that the seat belt goes through, then locks in the usual way. The clip is attached to Bailey's harness. I wouldn't want a flying projectile in the car, should an accident happen, let alone imagine that it would be Bailey. How horrible I would feel!! |
