!!!!Microsoft Word Starter 2010 Problems Since Critcal Update!!! Anyone else having the Microsoft Word Starter 2010 (that came loaded on your computer) problems opening your old documents since the lovely MS critical updates this month? I found a fix that is working - at least now. Just mad as heck it took looking around and going through panic to find an answer and still don't know if Bill Gates will allow it to keep working!!! Grrrrrrrr. :(:eek::confused: |
I have no idea what Word version I have and haven't had any problems, but Word drives me nuts in general. And, I curse Bill Gates daily. :D |
Have no need for MS Office so I've just been creating and saving and opening my documents with MS Word Starter 2010 until today. Tried to open a vital document and all my saved documents were ORANGE and called docx files and nothing would open. Finally I went to the MS Word Starter 2010 and opened it and can open the documents once in it - a slow, slow process. But I finally found the virtual option to use and now am able to open the documents directly within whatever folder they are in but don't know how long this will last. Apparently MS loaded Word Starter 2010 on a lot of computers and then one of the critical Windows updates apparently changed everything. But thank goodness, despite all of the Draconian methods suggested online about reinstalls and reformats or downloading one of the free and sometimes scary open source programs and such, using the virtual manager option the files are all directly opening. Just hope they will open tomorrow!!!!!!! Turns out Microsoft found too many people weren't following up with purchasing Office since they had Word Starter 2010 and now they are messing with it - and you have to purchase Office at $99/per year to open your old documents unless you can find a way around!!! So Bill wasn't making enough $$$ off Word Starter 2010 so his minions just set about and made our world dark for many hours for those of us relying on Word Starter while everybody hunted all over the internet for help and answers. I found my help on ONE SITE buried in pages of scary options with just one two-line post! Lots of people said they just broke down and purchased Office, fearing they would lose their old documents or not having time to search for answers!!!! Bill Gates just got lots richer since the last Windows Critical Update last week! I have a few things I'd like to say to Microsoft about their word processing programs!!! |
$99 a year? That is nuts. Then I would just buy office and re-save all the documents. |
Yes. Since the update I completely lost all of my MS Office programs. I'm not paying $99 per month. I downloaded Open Office. Are you familiar with it? It's free programs that are very similar to the MS Office programs. All of my excel spreadsheets and word documents transferred flawlessly. Apache OpenOffice - The Free and Open Productivity Suite |
Well, there is a free option they don't tell you about or how to fix it until you poke around on the internet and on the MS Word Starter 2010 Support site, their suggestions didn't help me until I found the other option at another site. They don't even mention any easier or cheaper ways at the MS Support site. One of their suggestions was to reload the program and those that did said now they are without the program and are only offered to buy Office! Another was call your computer company - as if THEY can help. Or reformat!!!!!!!! Yikes! I'll bet Billy Gates made himself a little spending money with this little mess they created. Even on Twitter people were wailing about not being able to get their documents. |
That's why I write in Vi lol. |
Lucky! :( |
I'm on 8 and just might stay there, it works just fine. I never start at the beginning of any of these changes, too many glitches to work out. |
I'm unable to open any of mine either. I reloaded the software and now its basically gone. It's ticking me off. |
I changed my document opener to MS Office Client Virtualization Handler. Right click on the one of the .docx document icons and see if your system gives you that option. If so, choose it and it will likely allow you to open all of the documents this way. |

I'll look tomorrow to see if I have the option you listed. I'm also having issues with Internet explorer on 2 different computers. I'm about ready to throw them in the parking lot! |

It's a great program to replace if you want to get rid of MS Word. |

It's weird how so many issues are popping up after the last update. My BIL thought he lost an entire folder. Apparently, one of the updates he did, it changed his setting and made certain folders "invisible". |
so is this what is being loaded on new computers. I live on Word and Excel for my job and since I work at home would have no one to help me so I sure hope my computer lasts a long time, dealing with new computer programs and hardware gives me hot flashes and mini panic attacks |
I think MS Word Starter 2010 was just a year or two experiment but MS didn't like it because so many who didn't do a lot word processing, office work at home, etc., were happy with it as it came free loaded on the computer, wasn't this huge program of extra's they don't need as Office is so they didn't upgrade to Office for a couple hundred or whatever it costs and pay MS any more money. So I doubt they even offer it now on new computers as too many people liked it as it was and wouldn't buy Office; so now they probably just load a trial of Office & then you'll have to upgrade to it in a while like in the old days. So if you do get a new computer, you'll prob. have all things like you are used to in a temporary Office program and if you upgrade, you'll just get more extra's and support. Word Starter 2010 was fine until the September Windows Update and then they tweaked it so our old docs wouldn't open at all, we can't open new documents as Word documents and have to choose Rich Text Format and I don't know if it behaves in the same way as Word docs do. But supposedly many have called Microsoft and gotten things worked out while others were unhappy and got little help. Thankfully with this virtual manager I can open and work in and save my old Word docs but just can't start a new one. That is so crazy that they would do this to us Word Starter users and try to force everyone to go buy Office or rent it for $99 a year like so many said they did since they didn't have the time or inclination to look for help on the internet which can take hours until you find the right answer! Some claim the next Windows Update should have a patch to fix all of this but Microsoft hasn't said a word that they are doing that as far as I know. We'll see what happens but if worst comes to worst, maybe Rich Text Format docs are just as flexible as Word docs. |
