Woman Accused of Cruelty After Refusing Dog Surgery

When I read the title, I thought, wow what a horrible owner. But after reading, I really think the ER vet was out of line. FYI the dog is alive, though the article doesn't say how or what happened. Poor guy.

It says the dog was hit and dragged by a car.

No I mean after they left the vet. It doesn't say how he survived.

Wow, just wow. The woman flippin' asked if she could go home and get a check and they said they wouldn't 'allow' it bc she might abandon the dog! Unreal!

Heck, I'd be suing too. I understand, totally, where the vet office was coming from -- but they cannot extort people!

They can require payment and hold the pet. They were also in the right to have owner sign an AMA form. But they cannot threaten owner when they want a second opinion! Totally crazy. They deserve to be sued.

Many a HBC pup doesn't even require surgery.

It may vary by state, but yes. Pets are property, so it isn't considered any different than holding a car or computer after fixing until payment is received. Here is CA's law:

They can also tack on boarding fees.

I know someone who's cat was being held by a vet for payment. She called the police and the vet was told he can't do that . It was a civil matter so he had to file a court claim, but no holding a pet as collateral allowed here.

Ontario courts award compensation for emotional distress associated with the loss of a pet

An appeal won, with-in it states Contrary to popular belief pets are not considered property that would exclude pain loss suffering.

The vet could have been worried she was going to just take the dog home and let him suffer.

It will be interesting to see if that decision influences US judges.
There are many veterinarians here who would be very displeased if that happened, as they should be.

For me this is a hard one. I think good arguments can be made on all sides of the issue.
I don't want to see vets get stolen from; ie folks not paying, and ditching their animal on the vet; I also don't want to see some-one being told they can't go home to get a cheque. That seems a little un-fair.

Yes, and we are only hearing the woman's' side. So many "human" hospitals have closed all over the country, I would hate for this to happen to our animal clinics.
