New York For Christmas/my mom's birthday I planned a weekend in New York with her. We are going on Feb 3-5. Any ideas for things to do? What's a good show - I can try to get tickets on ebay or something...any advice?? Restaurants that aren't too expensive?? I've never really been there as a tourist (I've gone for a couple of hours for conferences with work, but I've never seen the sites)... |

a weekend is not enough...so i suggest you pick/ plan a few things to do and have 1 or 2 things set aside in case what you plan doesn't work out. what do you/mom like to do? |

A must see? Wicked!! Its a musical thats been out for 3 years now. Its amazing!! http://www.wickedthemusical.com/ :D (yes you could say I'm a little obsessed with it :p) You could probably get tickets on ebay if you wanted too. hmm, how do you feel about hights? there's that new tour attraction, "the rock" its at the top of one of the tallest buildings if I'm not mistaking. I know there's a lot more, hmm I'll have to think about it. |
I love New York. I got to go there once with my roomate that was a flight attendant. We flew there for a day, we arrived in the morning and left that night. It was such an awesome day but I wish I could go back for at least a week next time!! I recommend eating alot :p . They have such good food in New York! |
one thing that stinks is your picking a really cold time so you cant go to beaches and parks really have fun go to as many plays as you can thats the bigest thing in the city |

Since you are only going to be here for the weekend, I suggest take one of the tour buses that drive you around Manhattan, its a guided tour and you sit on the bus and have a great view. You can get off and on at different site if there are some you really want to see up close. There are buses that leave from Time Square and you can choice either a tour of lower Manhattan, Midtown, or upper Manhattan. I like the lower Manhattan tour, more to see (in my opinion). Whenever we have people from out of town, we take them on this tour so then can get a good overview of the city and its sites, I think I love it more than they do. |
Hmmmm...you can check out the 9/11 site if that interest you. From there walk over the brooklyn bridge or at least half way...lots of good pics can be had. Then head back to manhattan and check out Chinatown. ROAST DUCK!!!! If you plan on sampling chinese food let me know and i can point out from nice place. From Chinatown walk to Little Italy (its not far...Little Italy is inside chinatown) Take the subway and head to 34th street and go up the empire state building. From there take the bus tour like fourdez mention. after that walk from 34th street to 42nd for the broadway show. just some ideas. Holla if you have any questions. |
Jessica, that is a wonderful gift for your mom. I know that you're mom will treasure the time that you'll have with you. Never been to the Big Apple, but I'm sure others will help you out! I hope to one day plan a cruise with my mom...since she really is my best friend! :p |
Start spreadin the news..... I used to oversee stores there....I love New York...Have to see play right now is Wicked....also must do activity is Empire State bldg at night...hopefully a clear one...it is so beautiful...maybe try to get in the matinee of the Rockettes show at Radio City or of course just a walk down 5th ave is always fun....have a blast there is so much to do in the city |
I love NY! I would suggest the Empire State Building, Rockafeller Center, Times Square, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty (even if you can't go up in it anymore, it's still a sight to see!), Grand Central Station, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Museum of Natural History is kind of neat if you like stars and dinosaurs and that kind of thing, but it was a distant second to the Met, IMO. Unless you are really artsy, I wouldn't suggest the Museum of Modern Art. It's fairly pricey and my mom, sister and I just didn't "get it." They did have smaller art exhibits there, but nothing that was worth the lines and waiting (for us anyway!) Macy's and Saks are always fun- even if you don't like shopping, they're pretty notorious sites. Madison Square Garden is right near Macy's. We've done the NBC tour in years past, and you get to see the SNL set, as well as some other talk show/late night sets. FAO Schwartz might be something good also if you've never been there. It's a lot more commercialized now than when I remember going as a kid, but it is still pretty fun. You guys are going to just have so much fun walking from place to place in the city- there is so much to see! I would highly recommend the street pretzels, the sweet nuts (I think they're called Nuts for Nuts or something) and street Gyros. I know we always get the Gyros off of 5th Ave, kind of near St. Patrick's Cathedral. Oooh- that's another good place to go (if you're Catholic!) The pretzels and nuts are everywhere, just avoid the vendors whose carts are smoking or smell burnt- it's not just their grills! (For whatever reason, there were a ton smoking when we were there the other week.) The rest of my family loves the street hotdogs, but I'm not much of a hotdog girl to begin with. We once did a Harbor Tour. I think it's about 2 or 3 hours and you get to see everything from the water. It's a nice chance to relax after walking all day, and you still get to see the sites. The horse-drawn carriage rides around Central Park are fun, too. I think it was about $40 when we went, for maybe half an hour. Have a great time! You're going to love NY! |
