Does anyone know anything about Mockingbirds?
 

I had a baby in my backyard, he looked hurt. I was going to catch him so I can take him to the bird vet- they take care of them, and release them. I thought he was hurt but realized he just cant fly yet, he was flapping but couldnt get up. He ran through a hole in our fence. I went to the other side and I found him. He is stuck between my gate and the cement block wall.. I tried to get him.. Till I heard Mom and Dad over my head- they were squaking at me, when I knealed down the mom swooped at my head .. Lol I dont really want to get attacked this morning... Is there anything I can do?? There is no way he will be able to get out unless he can fly.

Both parents know where it is, so thats good. You're not kidding- as soon as I saw Mom, Dad flew in. They kept getting close to me- no fear of me really, on the other hand I was peeing my pants!! I knew without a doubt if I didnt leave they would have starting attacking me Lol!! The baby is in such a hard spot too, not easy to get- I took some pics, I will upload them when I get to work.

I feel so bad for him, I'm sure they wont feed him down there- maybe I dont know. Maybe I will put on my dirt bike helment and Dh's riding jacket and save it!

I would leave it where it is and watch to see if mom & dad will feed it where it is for a couple days. They know where their baby is and they will protect it till it's ready to take off on it's own. You are such a tender soul Taylor and I know you want what is best for the baby. Watch it today and see what happens then if there is no new activity, put on your helmet and go for it!!

Last night on Jimmy Fallon Kristen Bell was taking about a mockingbird in her yard that she can't get rid of. It imitates car alarms in the middle of the night. She has tried everything to get it to leave and it just sits there mocking her. lol

I did some reading, I found this info!!

Fledglings NORMALLY will jump or fall out of the nest. This is their "flight training" stage. The mother bird will then continue feeding the bird on the ground until the bird is able to fly (usually only takes a few days). Unless injured, these birds should be left where they are. Efforts should be made to keep cats, dogs, and curious children away from the bird so the mother can continue to feed it.

Baby birds that are naked for the most part (featherless or feathers just starting to come in) are considered to be "nestlings". These birds stay in the nest and the parents come to feed them there. These babies, when found, are usually on the ground directly below the nest. This occurs either because the baby fell out, blew out (common after wind storms), or was "pushed" out by a sibling.

The best thing to do is to try to place the bird back in its nest if at all possible. If the nest cannot be reached for some reason, the following works very well. (This is also the procedure to use if you find the whole nest on the ground.)


Make a "makeshift" nest out of a clean Cool-Whip container or margarine dish. Make holes in the bottom of it to allow for water drainage. Line the bowl with paper towels. Then tack the makeshift nest back up in the tree as close to the original nest as possible. Finally, place the baby bird(s) into this and leave. The parents will usually come back in a short time and will feed the babies in it just like it was the original nest. (Often, you will see the mother going back and forth between each "nest", feeding both sets of babies.)

The only time we recommend bringing the baby birds in is if you KNOW that the mother is dead or if the babies are injured in any way. The natural parents do a much better job at raising their young than we could ever do. A baby bird that is featherless must be fed every 15-20 minutes from about sunrise to 10 pm! This obviously requires a large time committment on the part of the foster parent.

Hmm maybe I will wait a day see what happens, then I can make him a little nest- I will have to suit up to do this LOL!
Hopefully it is a couple days as they say and he can fly out of there and live his life.

Thanks for posting this, this happens to us all the time, we have a large tree that the mockingbirds love and the babies are always falling out of the nest. They have dove at me many times, and now when I watch the birds, it's a much scarier show.

I have raised baby birds that have fallen out of their nests so if you need help let me know

Thanks! Does the above sound right? He did have all feathers, and was able to flap his wings and get up but not stay up- so I assume he should be able to fly shortly… I would rather leave him to see if it is true, rather than take him away from his parents.

I guess you learn something new every day! LOL I don’t know why baby birds flock to me. Remember a while ago I found a baby bird on the ground… That baby was really small, didn't have feathers or color yet!

I seriously was calling her bluff, I told myself “ she isn't going to attack me”.. boy was I wrong LOL. I know they have a nest in that tree the Mom and Dad were in. It is an Oak tree. I always see my neighborhood hawk in there. Last weakened I walked outside and heard them squatting so loud, I looked in the tree spotted the hawk, the Mockingbird M & D were both dive bombing it.

Ok here are the pics.. In the first one see my fence (wood) that little cement wall is where he is. He is between that and my wood fence. He is kind of up in the middle, so he is on a slope. The tree you see in the picture is where his M and D are. So thankfully they are right over him. The second one is close up, he is really hard to see, he camouflages really well. He is the cutest little thing.
