Our hearts are breaking ..... ... for our 16 year old granddaughter, Kayla. She has had a huge black cat, Spooky, practically her entire life and today she was killed by a pit bull who is allowed to run loose in our neighborhood!! "The Spook" was, without a doubt, the sweetest, most loyal cat I have ever known and never, ever bothered anyone! She only loved Kayla and was her very best friend all these years! She was just a fat old cat that just wanted to lay in the sunshine and wait for Kayla all day. She never wandered anywhere in their house ... just wanted to be in Kayla's room with her. All these years, every time I tucked Kayla in her bed at night [and yes, I still do!] ... I always had to tuck Spooky in also! She has snuggled and watched over her when she is sick .... played with her for hours on end. She will be missed by all of us, but especially by Kayla. When I called her today, I have not heard such brokenhearted tears since she was a very little girl. She is scheduled to leave in the morning for her Youth Group's annual trip to Gatlinburg, TN. Maybe she will still go and it will be good for her to be with her friends and perhaps ease her grief. My daughter-in-law heard their outside dog barking & went to see why ... the pit had Spooky still in his mouth but dropped her and ran when Cindy came out the door. They rushed her to the vet, but there was nothing he could do ... he said the dog grabbed her by her chest & he feels she was killed instantly. My son came home & called the police ... they know he will shoot the dog ... they don't plan to hear the shot. Ordinarily I don't want to see any animal killed, but God forgive me, I just can't keep the thought out of my mind ... my tiny 2 yr. old granddaughter plays in that yard where Spooky was killed!!! Please remember my Kayla in your prayers that her little heart will heal. She has never lost a pet before and certainly not in this violent manner. |
How horrible! :( Thank goodness you didn't have your grandaughter today. |
I am so sorry for your daughter, and Spooky...I will keep them both in my prayers, and I pray her heart didn't break as much! This is why pitbulls need to....... |
I'm so sorry for you're grand-daughter. That was a horrible way to loose a beloved pet. She'll be in my thoughts and prayers. |
I am SO sorry to hear about "the spook". what a great cat and I'm so sorry that so many irresponsible people let their PITBULLS do such a thing. We have a rescued himalayn persian staying at my friends home if your grand daughter may be interested in her. She's spayed and is a blue point. Sweet kitty, but a little deaf we think. All the more to need someone's love. Otherwise, you and your grand daughter are in my prayers. |
How sad, I'm so sorry for her loss. I too had a big black cat that I loved more than anything RIP. What a horrible way to loose your wonderful pet. She and Spooky will be in my prayers tonight. |
Oh wow... is that so sad.... and I want to send your grandaughter a hug....that's so awful to hear and must have been super awful to see... I don't understand how people can let a Pitt Bull run around in the first place.....The people are the ones I hold responsible not the dog - I hope they get slapped with more than a tap on the wrist - this happens far too often and it just shouldn't !! I was so close to my cat at her age too....What a hard thing to go thru at 16...poor Spooky. I hope it was so sudden he felt no fear...bless his heart. :( |
How horrible. I'm so sorry for your granddaughter and her cat. I hope she still goes on the trip to Gatlinburg. I really think it would be good for her. |
The way her cat died is going to make it more difficult for her to get over it. I feel so sorry for her. If she'd lived here that wouldn't have happened, because it is illegal to own one here. :( |
OOOHH so sorry for all she is going thru- God bless |
First off I am so sorry for your granddaughters loss!!! Cats are such loyal companions and I know she must be heartbroken. And poor Spooky! Quote:
Bouncer and I will keep Spooky and your granddaughter in our prayers! You should let her know Spooky will be watching her from kitty heaven for the rest of her life just like he always did on Earth. :) *BIG PUPPY HUGS* |
Im so sorry for your loss. It so hard to lose some thing you love so much. |

I agree...it's not the dog. They don't know any better. It's the OWNERS!! :thumbdown |
Oh, that's horrible, bettyeanne! :( Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your granddaughter. |
OMG, poor baby. Your granddaughter must be feeling like she lost a sibling, my heart goes out to her. What a senseless death, all because of irresponsible owners. I will remember her in my prayers. |
I wanted to cry reading this heartbreaking news. My prayers are with your grandaughter. May Spooky RIP. My heart goes out to your family. Please give your grandaughter a hug from me. I know how one can be filled with so much anger they want and will do harm to the dog who attacked. When Gus was attacked by a German Shepherd I went to the owners house to tell them what their dog did and the damn dog growled at me. I was too scared to walk all the way up to the door for fear that she would come after me. There was no car in the driveway so I figuared they werent home. I did call the police because she was out walking the streets, and they came with the animal control, they gave them a fine and a warning. About 4 months later there was a dead chi that was found in it's own back yeard. They lived next door to the Shephard but there was no proof that she did outside of the big hole under the fence that she dug,,,, but since nobody seen anything, they can't prove she did it. Not even a week after that she got out again and got ahold of a puppy and killed it right infront of the kids who where playing with her in their front yard. It took 3 attackes for them to finally take the dog away. Now I may get bashed for this but I wouldn't think twice of pulling an Annie Oaklie if I felt my kids or Gus were being threatened by a dog in our own yard. It's really sad because it's totally the owners fault and these poor dogs have to suffer for their owners mistakes. |
That is sooo sad! :( I will keep her in my prayers tonight! |
Oh Bettyeanne, this is so very said and I will for sure remember your little grand- daughter in my prayers. |
oh thats terrible! I'm so sorry. What an awful way for her to go! You granddaughter must be so grief stricken right now. :( I'll have her in my thoughts and prayers. Rest In Peace Spooky. Though, I agree. Its not just the dogs fault, it didn't know any better! Its the stupid owners for letting it run lose! :( |
What a sad day for you and your daughter, I am so very sorry.... But please, shoot the owner of the dog, not the animal who was just doing what unattended dogs do. A dog will hunt.... Any type of dog is capable of acting like a dog. Its their owners responsability to keep their animals contained... If it were my child playing in the yard with any type of dog loose, agressive or not, it would be in the back yard. I have no trust for stray dogs, I was bit by a toy poodle who was roming my street when I was like 9 or 10... She looked sweet! My mom had Poodles, they are nice! But you never know what condition they are in, starving, shock, abused, neglicted, tormented at home by other small children.... you can never really know the full story... I still have a scar from that bite! I would press charges on the owner and I would also go as far as to sue the owner in small claims... sounds silly, but it would drive a point home to this owner. Sue asking for a containment system to be installed at his property. It would get plenty of local attention and hopefully teach this pet owner a lesson. |
Thank you all so much for your kindness and concern for my Kayla at the loss of Spooky. It will take her a very long time to get over the horror of her death, if she ever does. I am ordering her a beautiful "Garden Stone" engraved with a sweet inscription and Spook's name, birth and death dates. Although Kayla was her whole world and she cared for noone else, we shall all miss her sweet face. |
I am so sorry to read this. Please know that Kayla and Spooky are in my heart and thoughts! I agree the dog didn't know any better but the owner did! They should be put behind bars. I understand the pain and why you feel the way you do about that dog. Hugs, irene |
Oh, my heart breaks with you :( Losing a pet is very difficult, losing one in such a senseless way just doubles the pain. I hope your grand daughter still considers going on her outing. I am so sorry.... God bless...... |
That is to terrible. I hate irresponsible pet owners who let their animals run free and then they end up harming others. I would be furious if this happened to one of my cats or my little Zeus. It just isn't fair that animals can't play in their "own" yards without having to worry about other animals coming into their yard. |
I feel so aweful for you and your granddaughter! We had a 23 yr old black cat that we loved too. She luckily died of natural cause 2 years ago. But we did have a neighbor a few years ago with a pit bull, a rottweiler, and a dalmation that they let roam our neighborhood as a pack. After awhile we banded together with three other neighbors and took them to court. It worked, no more dogs roaming, but unfortunately that is all that some poeple will respond to after it is too late for a nice kitty like your Spookie. I hope you reported them to the authorities though so it doesn't happen again to someones elses pet or to your granddaughter! |
