Discrimination against dogs!! Unbelievable! |
It is a shame. Black cats have it bad too. I think they are beautiful. I had a black kitty |

I've never heard of this. On Bonaire, black dogs are well respected and they are feared more. Most people prefer black dogs for guarding the house. |
Yes, this is very true and has been for a long time. Shelters often call it 'Black Dog Syndrome', bc black pets are so hard to get adopted, sadly :(. It's so odd though, bc I don't have a single bad association with black dogs, so where does it come from for people who do have a weird feeling about black dogs? I associate black dogs with awesome dogs, like black labs. Maybe it's bc of the movies, partly, bc often 'mean' dogs in entertainment are black. |
Feared more? I think that's part of the problem. What's so terrifying about them? |
I have no idea. That is how they see the black dogs there. They 'respect' them more than any other colored dog. |
Almost every dog in my neighborhood is black or has a majority of coloring being black. |
Crazy! I love seeing black dogs/ cats. I always notice the black dogs/cats have the prettiest color eyes, and a silky shiny coat. |
I know some say black dogs don't show up well in family photos or movies and you can't see their faces that well in a darkened room but I think black dogs are truly awesome. We had Dobermans for a time and there are no more beautiful creatures in the world. Black dogs, black horses and black cats are some of the most beautiful animals there are! |
It is sad.:( The most human-like, smart dog I have ever known was a black lab. But if they aren't black it will be something else (bully breed, old, etc.). |
Maybe it's stigma attached to the color black? My dad told me once at this office party when he used to work, they had a pot luck. He brought in a tray of Chinese sesame cookies. Half were made from white sesame, and half were black. They taste exactly the same. He said all the white ones were eaten and hardly anyone touched the black ones. Why was that? BTW I love black cats. And a lot of dogs have black heads or faces. Even yorkies start off with mostly black faces. |
Yes it has been going on for some time. Some shelters won't take in black dogs. The humane society near me has a large poster that says yes we take in black dogs while a humane society in a neighboring county strictly warns that they will not take them. It has always upset me. I have black dogs and a black cat. Truly wonderful and beautiful pets and I would love them no more or less if they were white, blue, brown or red. I never really understood it. Yes there are colors I prefer but ultimately I choose based on personality. I can't imagine going to a shelter and passing up a dog just because it was black. Are we really that superficial? |
I have never heard this. My son has a black lab and he is beautiful!! |
I always heard that black dogs are not wanted as much as other colors. It just proves that I dare to be different because I've had 3 dogs before/during Mandie and all 3 of them were black lol |
As a black dog breeder, I was well aware of this bias, and to top it off, a large dog as well. It is truly hard to know why really. Some ideas, the eyes particularly in my breed are a lovely deep brown, that does not show up well. Taking pictures of a black dog, be very patient to try to get some good shots. Somehow a whole host of other factors might go on, hidden underneath our consciousness. The hounds of hell. The Hounds of the Baskerville. Black is associated with evil. Black dog is almost invisible at night. Black is a power color, that associated with a large dog.....caution. While many many people have admired Magic, he literally can and does stop traffic when we walk, there is almost always a tinge of nervousness. How does he see? This was when he had his full hairfall and usually it was ponytailed up and off his face. He is beautifull but you can almost see their mind turning, but wow not sure I can trust him. Anyhow some thoughts on this subject. |
