Obama in Belfast next week So we are hosting the G8 summit here in Northern Ireland next week and hosting a visit from President Obama. I work right across the street from where he will be speaking (and apparently staying) all of this week we have seen major security across our city (takes me back to the 70's, if you know anything about Irish/Northern Irish history) Yesterday we saw a fleet of helicopters fly over the city centre (I am no stranger to helicopters, I live in a part of Belfast that sees helicopters flying low above our houses as a matter of course) I have heard that Airforce 1 is already here (really? Does Obama have the time to visit days before his official engagements?) Anyhoo, my colleagues and I are competing in a spot the FBI sniper competition, they are bound to be on our own buildings roof as well as the roofs of buildings across the way. Thinking of bringing my Alfie to work on Monday to see if Obama will walk the 50 metres from the hotel to the auditorium and maybe get a photo op. It is probably weird to think that I have a much better possibility of seeing the president of the United States than people who live in the States. |
I hope you get a photo op, that'd be cool - esp if Alfie is in it too! Airforce 1 may already be there bc of prep. His huge team does unheard of prep-work prior to any trip he takes. For example, there will be a floating military hospital on a warship somewhere near your area while he is there. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I was reading the other day that his upcoming 1 week family work-trip to Africa will cost us 60-100M dollars!!! UNREAL. |
So our local security bill for the g8 and Obama visit comes to £50 million there were about 150 protesters outside the summit. We were locked in our work building for 3 hours and Obama didn't get out of the car. We did see the ridiculously long cavalcade. My boss however was invited to his speech. All a bit of an anti climax really. |
Didn't see any snipers either,,, disappointed. |

My father had an office facing Pennsylvania Ave when Reagan was first elected. We watched the inauguration parade from the office windows. One of dad's crazy partners advised me to open the window to get a better picture with my telephoto lens. Keep in mind, I was a kid, so I trusted this prankster. We had Secret Service agents in the office in minutes yelling at us to close the window. |

It is amazing to think Reagan was shot 2 months later in an assassination attempt. |

Made me think of all the video I have seen of Kennedy's funeral, which of course must have been even more sad. |
