Window Guards? What does everyone use to stop their dog trying to get through the screen of an open window? The main windows that ZoE usually looks out of are in the living room. One is a fixed glass picture window and the other is a window that's behind a chaise, so it rarely gets opened because it's hard to reach. Last summer, I built a sunroom on the back of my house. It has lots of windows. ZoE seems sure this room was built just for her and loves to sit in there and look out the windows. Problem is, it's not a heated/cooled space, and with all those windows is gets hot in there in the warmer months, so opening windows is a must. I'm afraid ZoE will charge through the screen if she sees a bird, squirrel, rabbit, etc in the yard...and it's a bit of a drop to ground level  So, I was thinking about building a window guard out of wood. Then I thought I'd probably need a few of them, so I could have a few windows open & get a cross-breeze. Now when faced with this project, along with all my many unfinished projects (including trimming out the sunroom)...I'm hoping someone has come across an easier solution. |
I was talking to a lady that had gotten an idea off a show on TV. You have seen those scrolly, gingerbread wrought iron pieces that people use on their carports, usually on either side of where the support poles are, along the top edge of the carport....this lady took two of them, put the "L" shaped side in the bottom right corner of her window, and the other she turned over and put the "L" shaped in the top left corner of her window....the decorative edges almost reached each other, running catty corner across in the middle of her window.....are you able to imagine what I am trying to describe?.... It looks great across her windows and it works to keep her cats from scratching on her screens and to keep her Jack Russell from bailing thru the screen when he sees a squirrel. Her windows were not huge, and they were the perfect shape, more square than rectangle..... |
Would something like this work? KidCo Mesh Window Guard : Target I guess there are many varieties of things like this that kind of fit inside the screen to reinforce its strengh and might be easier than building and painting wood ones. Or probably just a bar or two of aluminum criss-crossed and nailed into place or parallel to each other across the bottom 1/3 of the screen would reinforce it enough to rebuff her if she tried to plunge or claw through. Good luck! |

I was kind of thinking about something that just pops in the open window and then you'd close the window down on it to keep it in place. Easy in, easy out, no damage to window or casing. |
Ah, I see what you mean. Surely there is a portable screen that fits in the opening in the window! Some people don't even have screens all the time but you know at times they must want one or two to pop in an open window. I'll bet you can find them online or go to your bigbox hardware stores and see what their manager suggests. |
I made an album of my sunroom project if you'd like to see it. I had an existing foundation from a ....bomb shelter? But, the roof leaked and needed replacing. When I looked into the cost of replacing the concrete slab roof, with the amount of rebar it would need to keep that roof safe, it wasn't much expensive to build a whole room on top of it. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/alb...?albumid=15395 |
I can't tell what these are. Can they fit in there or are they too big? Adjustable Window Screens | Gracious Home | Product |

Here's a link to my breezeway album...(see I really am a DIY nut and go crazy with my power tools :D). I did this the first summer at my wee house, so wanted the sunroom windows & door to reflect the breezeway, that was already done, which is why I went with so many narrow windows in the sunroom. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/alb...?albumid=15396 |
Open the windows from the top down? Nice job! |
