For those in the medical field.. I twisted my ankle last Wed and heard plus felt something pop in there but when I went to the ER and had X-rays the Dr was just creepy and an ahole!! Even after telling him I fell hard on my butt and had stomach cramps at no point did he even check the baby, but anyway he just said it was a sprain and that he was sorry I would have to settle for tylenol in a way that made me feel as if he was saying I was freaking it for the drugs. Did not wrap it or say ice it or anything. Well here I am going on 7 days later and it is still swollen but in an odd way like just around the end of the fibula, hurts like hell to touch the area BUT no bruising there just a purple line at the bottom of my foot where it starts to roll into the sole and I still can not walk normal on that foot. Does this sound right for a sprain? Just wondering if I should have it checked again by another Dr, I really rather not due to more X-rays but I would rather know if something else is wrong. |
Sorry you had a bad ER experience. Have more xrays done. Sometimes a break is not found on initial films. Plus, if you have been walking around on it, something could be worse now. That is what happened to my father. I would also follow up with your OB. That isn't right that the ER didn't check your baby. I would avoid Tylenol too. Hope everything is okay with both your ankle and your baby. |
I should have added -- sometimes sprains can take a long time to heal. It would be best if you can stay off it as much as possible. Also, I'm not in the medical field . . . just lots of family experience. :) |
Ok so my son broke his leg twice, arm twice, I broke both my legs and arm, we have had multiple sprains as well (we are all athletically inclined, were just clumsy athletes)...I can attest that sprains IMHO are worse, a break you get a cast and all is well, a sprain swells, doesn't swell, swell, reinjure etc...I detest sprains. |
Stay off the foot....elevate the foot anytime you are sitting down....alternate ice packs and heat packs for the swelling...There could very easily be a hairline fracture in that ankle or you could have torn a tendon. I would not put much confidence in a physician that did not show even a passing concern for a pregnant woman who had fallen. I would return and ask to see another doctor and tell them you would appreciate having your foot re-rayed, to see if perhaps a small fracture was missed during the first visit. Meanwhile, elevate the foot and use your ice/heating pad alternatively. Good luck with this....my cousin did the same exact thing and she had a torn tendon in her ankle......unfortunate carreer ending injury for a ballarena (sp?). |
First, Elevate the ankle as much as possible and try not to walk on it and wrap with ace bandage with ice. Second, I would definitely get yourself checked with the OB because the DR should've made sure your baby was ok even if he isn't specialized in OB every DR knows how to make sure an unborn baby is ok lol. Can you move your foot from side to side? It does sound like a sprain to me, imho. I am a nurse btw (I prob should've said that to begin with haha) |
I agree with the others. Rest, ice, compress & elevate. The nurse should have checked fetal heart tones on the baby. Anyone over 12 weeks along should get this vital sign checked. I can't believe they didn't at least wrap it, and it sounds like you should have a stirrup splint for support, or at least some crutches. Call your OB. She/he could order an outpatient xray to avoid the additional ER charge if she feels another look is warranted. Even if it isn't fractured, it sounds like one h*** of a sprain and sometimes those can take almost as long to recover from as a fracture. |
I forgot to say that the nurse that gave me my discharge papers was rather upset he did not check the baby so she did it herself so in the end that was actually checked and she also wrapped my ankle as the Dr was saying his goodbyes for the day. I also had an U/S the very next morning so I know I am good in that area. I have been keeping it up and icing it but still can not bend it to the right. I guess I had better call my knee Dr today, I just know he will be sooooo excited to hear from me again haha What killed me the most was the Dr actting like I was drug hunting... I had good stuff sitting in my purse next to him which I have already been cleared to take (but I do not) so getting pills was the LAST thing on my mind!! |

And btw, sprains can be just awful...I had one in my ankle years ago and I thought for sure it must be broken bc it was swollen for so long and I was on crutches for about 2 or 3 weeks, I think...? They can really take a lot of time to heal. |
