I took over the dog shelter I took my sick self to the Dr., a job interview and the Animal Shelter which was right next door! I fell in love with every freaking dog there! Somewhere along the lines I started figuring out who amongst the potential adopters would be good with which dog....hehehehehe! I became so tight with some of these folks! This one lady though, omg...I wanted to scream she took a big beautiful lab mix who was excited to get out of the kennel and as soon as he was riled she was like oh no...I want a calm dog and then I heard her chatting with her kids and eventually of course, I opened my big mouth and said maybe you should get a stuffed animal???? The lady from the shelter, who also heard the nonsense coming out of this woman's mouth, turned and hurried away...I followed her, sure I was getting kicked out:Dand she turned and looked at me and was hysterically laughing...she said she was so glad I said something...needless to say that woman was pissed and left! Honestly she needs NOT to have a dog... I personally feel I helped adopt 5 dogs out! Yeah, I'm bragging, it felt great and the people were wonderful! I even talked a very elderly couple out of a puppy and found them the sweetest little 10 year old pug beagle mix! When I was leaving three people from the shelter came up and said Thank You to me and said how sweet that was and how good I was at it...and asked if I was happy that I got them adopted...I was surprised, I thought I was covert and on the downlow, hadn't noticed they were watching....I told them yeah I felt good about the dogs going to forever homes, but I can't imagine leaving the others behind each day...and I told them how grateful I am for people like them, devoting all their time etc...see good people are just always good, thanking me? ridiculous, we owe so much to folks like this. I got in my car and cried my eyes out...I know I could never work in a shelter...how selfish I feel... but all in all, it was a great experience! |
Lynzy- I mean this from the bottom of my heart...I am so glad that I joined YT and am learning more and more about you! Your passion for the animals is amazing and I am so glad you shared this story. It made me tear up and smile at the same time. |
yeah - what she said :D You rock, Lynzy |
Awesome day! Great job! :) |
Great job Lynzy! I feel so bad for the pups at the shelter... I'm glad you got several adopted :) |
Great job. I just started back volunteering at the no kill shelter doing the shelter talk and tours for schools, scouts, clubs etc. It is so exciting to be there when a dog or cat gets adopted. I've only been back 2 weeks and I am in love with about 4 dogs and 2 cats. Fortunately 2 of the dogs are waiting to go to their new homes. It's also been good to see that the younger generation is being educated on why you spay and neuter and that a pet is a life time commitment. I am amazed at the dedication of the shelter staff and I know they work for next to nothing. |
I wish everyone could volunteer for a day at a shelter; it might wake them up to why indiscriminate breeding is so harmful. Every dog alive deserves a loving home and the only good reason for breeding is to preserve and improve the breed. Some people wish all breeding would stop, but this would disregard all the hard work that dedicated breeders have spent their lives on. I hope it never comes to the point where breeding is outlawed, but what we’re doing is shameful. Lynzy, you rock, thanks for educating others. |
You awesome! So are every one who works with rescues and at shelters. |
Lynzy, I think it is awsome that you have the talent to match prospective owners with the right dogs for them. I think that is actually much harder than you make it sound, sizing up both the people and the dogs like that. Great talent and good job!:D |
Lynzy, that's just awesome. I would love to have seen that woman's face. There are some people who just shouldn't have animals, or even kids in some instances. My oldest plans to attend veterinary school, and wants to volunteer with a shelter or rescue. I'm proud of her, but I cringe because I know she would want to drag home a menagerie. We are looking for a place for her to volunteer that fits into her already crazy schedule. |

It doesn't matter the situation, I can read people, I am rarely wrong in that regard...people I know are always telling me I'm Psychic, I think its instinct and experience! I have been thinking about this post and wondering if perhaps I shouldn't help, learn to keep emotions in check and do volunteer to do this. Either that or sell furniture?? lol Thanks for this, it made me think... |

Darn you YTers, always getting me in deep poo...I'm on my way over to volunteer for cheerleading duty, I've got to at least try it! |
YEAH!!!!!! BTW we will want a full report when you get back! |
What a beautiful thing to do! Now, cheerleading might be a challenge.. LOL God Bless You Lynzy! |
Wow! You did good! I couldn't work there either. They would all come home with me. Poor babies. |
Good for you, volunteering at a shelter is one of the most rewarding ways a animal lover can spend their time. As many of you know I Volunteer at Atlanta Pet Rescue (www.AltantaPetRescue.org). In the time I have been there I have learned so much about dogs, cats and the people who come in to adopt. I spend almost every Saturday morning training new Volunteers on the many aspects to running a Volunteer based rescue including everything from deep cleaning the shelter to the organizing the Volunteer dog walkers. Every Sunday is spent as an Adoption Counselor, which as great as it sounds (and it is) is also very difficult because there are times you have to say "no". Lynzy, I encourage you and anyone else interested in volunteering to do so. As much as I thought I would want to take everyone home I get as much gratification from seeing the dogs and cats going to a loving home. I have had everyone from Widows and Widowers to a 12 year old girl who's parents have decided they are "ready" cry with joy and hug me as they are walking out the door with their new family member. I truly LOVE the people who are repeat adopters, after a few months they come back for another new family member - and believe me this happens a lot. |
That's awesome Lynzy! What a gift to be able to do what you did and sounds like you are continuing to do! Can't wait for the update from your most recent visit there. |
Wow that was wonderful that you helped. I am like you. I would cry. One of the rescues wanted me to foster. I just couldn't. I would have a bunch of foster failures. lol. You did a good thing and should be proud of yourself. Good luck on your job interview. I hope you got the job. |
