Bummer today I had an interview I had a telephone interview for a position at my husbands company. It was going so well, I met all their criteria and up to a certain point, they met mine. My DH works for the company and it's a HUGE company, we'd be in different building altogether, but the same town. The big deal is it's 130miles round trip commute. Hubby does it 3 days a week and works from home 2 days a week. Its not a horrible commute if you go in earlier than rush hour and leave before rush hour. So he works mainly 7am to 4pm. I knew it would be a LONG shot but I was interviewing for his company hoping I could work the same hours and work from home the same days. Well, even though his dept lets their people, and it may become a company policy to allow people to work from home up to 2 days a week, the dept of the job I applied for wants their people in the office 5 days a week from 8-5. To me, that is not a salary position, and the money although awesome, is not worth the time. Its over an hour drive, gas is $3.60 a gallon right now, I'd rather have my TIME, than money. I am currently working a temp to perm contracting job 6 miles from my house, which takes me 20 mins. My DH had a friend of his put a good word in for me directly with the manager, and my only hope is, the company creates a work from home 2 days a week policy that may mean I might have a shot at the job. I don't mind leaving the house at 6am 3 days a week, but not 5. UGH! I did say that being onsite 5 days a week was break it situation, and I stuck to my word, I knew the job was a long shot, but I really feel disappointed that it didn't work out. :( |
well you may feel bummed but maybe that means there is something much better down the road. sorry you werent able to seal the deal. try and stay positive...maybe they will change their minds. |
yeah I know... I got laid off in Oct from a GREAT job. A few days later (honestly Im lucky so Im not complaining) I got a contract position, which allowed me to put some money in the bank, YAY! Where I am now, Im a contractor and although the pay is good I have no benefits and no stability, and I don't really care for the job, there is no room for growth, no where to move around. I just want a stable job, closer to home than 65 miles that pays decent. |
well i will pray something perfect comes your way!! |
Thanks girl! I appreciate it! :) |
I hope something can be worked out for you or you find a great job close to home. |
I just had a phone interview and didn't get the job that I thought for sure I would get. I had all the qualifications.:mad: |
Boy, if you can make it without having to make that drive to and from and pay that much and spend all that time, I don't think I'd take that job either! When I work part-time at the doctors' office in Arlington, Texas, it is a 34 mile trip each way on a highway infested with big, fast 18-wheelers, especially coming home late. I couldn't drive that far each way on a regular basis to save my life! Well, maybe for that but not for a job - even one with a great deal, a great deal of perks aside from the good pay and appreciation and all of that. That much car-time is not my idea of a career or a life. When there is a traffic jam, it can take 2 1/2 hours to get home! I do so hope you can fine a better job closer to home before too long. Hold out for closer as long as you can. |

I worked a job that was 78 miles round trip. Luckily it was interstate the whole way and I could make it in less than 45 min, but I am now working 5 miles from my house. Even driving through a deer-infested park at 35mph, I can still get to work in 8 minutes or less from my driveway. I went from filling up my car 2 times a week to once every 3 weeks, sometimes once a month. It is absolutely fantastic. I have gained an hour of sleep (or puppy play time) and feel like I got a pay raise with what I save in gas and car maintenence. Hold out for the job that suits you best. There is no sense in working just to pay for gas! |

My job now is 6 miles from home, but it's in downtown, and I need to park in a garage a few blocks away. So the drive in is about 15 mins and then the walk is about 5. Its not bad, but I cant' leave before 5 ever unless I come in at 8am. I might do that in the summer if I'm still here. I shouldn't complain though, something perfect and more permanent will come up. :) I don't mind contracting at all, it's just unstable but Im putting money in the bank in case I don't find something and the contract ends. It would be nice to be here until June, and then look for a job while summer is here and I can enjoy time off outside to do yard work (our yard needs help!), work out, walk the dogs more, etc.... Im trying to get money in the bank so I can do that in June and try to take 3 months off work. |
The job world sucks soooo bad these days, I have worked for EVERY SINGLE major bank and mortgage companies in Jacksonville over the past 13 years... some paid great, others had me doing illegal thinks such as forging or faking doc's, I have been laid off more times then I can count once even 2 weeks after working for them after they begged me for 2 months to come work for them... now I am stuck in a job that I am HIGHLY over qualified for and can not for the life of me get out of this department because ever next level up job I apply for they tell me I am over qualified grrrrr At this point I am just ready to quit and work for myself but I need the health insurance too much!! |
