Anyone see this?: Vodka saves puppy My husband saw this on the news last. I missed the details because I was in another room. Poor little guy! Vodka Saves Puppy from Dying of Poisoning - Softpedia |
holy crap a bottle and a half......amazing i guess, thankful the puppy is ok but what person leaves and unattended baby in the garage that obviously is not puppy proofed. that part is very wrong to me. |
That is a good thing to know, that alcohol (ETOH) is the antidote to antifreeze. We used to use alcohol drips to save people who drank antifreeze, although I havent seen one in a very long time. (I have been a nurse since we could smoke at the desk, if that tells you anything). Anyway, if your dog gets into antifreeze, give it beer, vodka, rum, wine, whatever it will drink ON YOUR WAY TO THE VET. Do not treat this st home! |
I'm scared to death of having antifreeze anywhere near a pet. When I was a kid, my next door neighbor had the sweetest little cocker/bassett mix pup. Some jackhole intentionally gave sweet little Seymour antifreeze. He was only a couple of months old like this little fella. |
Wow I never knew this . . Hmmmm |
I am highly skeptical about this article. Alcohol is toxic to dogs, and causes kidney, liver, and nervous system damage: Can Dogs Drink Beer, Dogs and Alcohol, Is Beer Bad for Dogs - Pet Poison Helpline |

It has been used and can work, but it is NOT the treatment of choice: Merck Veterinary Manual If used, it has to be administered at a very slow rate in order to not reach toxic levels in the dog, whereas the most commonly used treatment (4-Methylpyrazole) does not have this issue. To the OP: I'm not chiming in here to contradict you, because I don't. I just fear that someone might read this and assume they can treat their dog at home should they drink some antifreeze. I only write this to clarify that ethanol has been used successfully, but there is a much better choice, and I wanted to point out that if you see your dog ingest antifreeze, don't think that you can just give them some vodka at home and they will be OK. They won't. Neither choice is something that can be done as a home remedy. Both require very slow delivery over a period of time, monitoring of blood results, and supervision by a vet. |
It never crossed my mind that this could be interpreted as a home treatment. |

I keep my antifreeze in my trunk and my babies are never without me or my hubby |
How does one get alcohol enough to help into a dog without them fighting and choking and that strong stuff cooking/burning their throat, etc., on top of the antifreeze damage? The stuff is so strong and repellant I get sick on just the fumes of fresh alcohol. I wondered if this were a hoax story when I read it and still wonder. |

Sorry, should have worded my question better. I was just wondering how one would do it on the way to the vet or something as mentioned above if it proves to be a valid story and if one is certain that the dog is suffering from antifreeze poisoning. I was pretty sure the vet would use an NG tube once the little one was there. It sure sounds like tough treatment if it is true! 1/3 of a bottle would put me on my behind for a couple days!!! |
