Good memory assiciation to smells I've been doing a lot of cooking lately. So, I'm sitting at my desk and I rested my chin on my hand and noticed a very faint smell of sweet onions, I closed my eyes for a second and a quick picture of my Grandmother chopping onions came to mind. She was my Mom's Mom...she always had a garden and her and my Mom would do a lot of cooking and canning. We had the biggest house so the holidays were always there and Grandma would come a day or two early to help get all of the food ready. Normally the smell of onions would be offensive but not for me...it brought back a good memory. What smells bring good memories for you? Well, I misspelled association in my title but I can't correct it :/ |
My mother always used that "Youth Dew" bath oil and I still love it because it reminds me of her. Such a loving lady. Lavender - my paternal grandmother used is for everything. Cocoa - my maternal grandmother always made us hot cocoa and was always cooking with it when we visited for holidays. Steak grilling - my father! |
You are correct, there is absolute proof that smells help us remember and some even think using smells when learning something new might help us learn faster. Live Christmas trees bring back a flood of memories, and even though I haven't had a live one for years, I still get a live wreath, but this year it had no scent. :( Old Spice reminds me of my dad, and the perfumes Arpege and Chanel Number 5 remind me of my mom. Oh and baby lotions and baby powders remind me of my sweet boys. |
Yep, Old Spice...I forgot about that one...my step-Dad wore that everyday. I don't have any specific smells that remind me of my Dad's mom but I picked up a panda bear one day that Grandma made when I was little and I swear it felt like that little bear gave me a hug...it was like a hug from Grandma and she's been gone for years now. |
Oh my goodness....'sudden' smells are so evocative - so many memories....:) Fenjal bath oil, and anything Chanel or Madame Rochas - my mother Imperial Leather shaving cream in the bowl - my dad Victory V lozenges and 'hand-rolled' tobacco - my grandad Apple crumble and Ponds face cream - my grandmother Johnsons baby lotion, powder and baby bath - my 2 'babies'....:rolleyes: :D Pantene conditioner - Harry.....:eek: :D x |
The smell of fresh coffee brewing is the most comforting smell in the world to me. Makes me think of family. The smell of new carpeting brings back vivid, warm and fuzzy memories of a very happy time for my family -- all the way back when I was 4. New home, new baby brother born, and I picked my bedroom and played with my Barbie dolls on the carpeting all night. |
Watermelon and Bologna sandwiches smells always remind me of summers in Texas as a child. We went on a picnic every week practically my whole childhood. My father for some reason loved the Bologna sandwich piled high with tomatoes, lettuce, mayo and - Wonder Bread! And he loved picnics. Mother would makes sandwiches, pies and Daddy would chill the watermelon and drinks in an ice chest. And off we would go to a different place each time to have out picnic. |
My Grandma always made peanut butter fudge so whenever I smell that I think of her. Ill leave my husbands smell up to the imagination. I used to bathe my dogs in minksheeny and it had a distinct cologne smell that I loved that I associated with them. When I smell pink sugar cologne I think of my daughter because thats what she wears. I love different smells especially lavendar and honey suckle |
Evening In Paris perfume reminds me of my Mom...I have one bottle left I like to open up once in a while. Wild Root...my Dad would use every day. Yes, there are many smells that will bring memories back! |
Jergens cherry almond lotion (the original). My mammaw used to use it all the time. I have some on my dresser right now. |
