I almost had a total panic attack....... My dd is on a trip to costa Rico. She sent me her trip info..and got international texting so she could keep in some contact with us. Yes she knows her mother. Well.. There was a little stress with getter her puppy durning her very short layover in Miami...but that worked out. Then last night about 5:30 we got a call saying our service on our cell phone plan (att) would be off for about eight hours. I call back with in minutes because that just sounded odd. I was assured that all was well and it must have been a prank call???? With in minutes our service was off. Called back on land line...they said I had called a reported my phone stollen:eek: I said no... I called becaue of the odd call I had received. I was on the phone for three hours...felt like I was talking to idiots and I was standing in quick sand:( It turns out that while I was calling and telling them about the odd call some one else was reporting ,my phone stollen and they reassigned e sim cards:eek: So all five phones on my plan were off service. I had to go to a store this morning to get new SIM cards But...dd is out of the country! After research it turns out the scam calls were from out of country..so now I can't get in touch with karrie...can't find the hotel...it was a horrible long night. I was not in a good place. I was visualizing horrible things I posted on her fb page .. Finally she called about noon! She still had her phone. She was fine. I felt like kissing the phone. I just don't understand how this scam happened..what the reason was...how it happened. I have a fraud claim with AT&T . Karrie is fine...that is what is most important |
Good golly! That is horrible. What in the world is going on with people? What was the purpose of that scam call - just to give you grief and hopefully cause all this? I'll bet you were just about to panic. Thank God your daughter is fine!!! Boy, technology can sure throw us a curve once people step in with devilment and who knows what on their mind, can't it? What a time for a person overseas to decide to scam you!!! |
Wow. I am glad things turned out. There is so many scams from out of the country. You have to watch everything now |
Omg! Really??! Do people have so much free time on their hands they can't think of anything better to do! How can you possibly get your jollies from doing something like this! :thumbdown. These people irritate me to no end! I'm glad your dd is ok and you have the phones back on. So sorry this happened to you Shinja. |

AT&T keeps saying it was her phone that made the reports of lost phones and changing the SIM cards. They knew my ss number to do so. I guess they did it to make calls? I just don't know..I was soo scared |
That must have been absolutely terrifying. I'm so glad everything worked out and your dd is just fine! |
How scary. I would have been panicked too. Glad she contacted you. |

My husbands ex girlfriend was fond of calling his credit card company, using his social and finding out his recent activity and then calling him to ask "how'd you enjoy that stars game?" or whatever he had done recently. It was nerve wracking! That plus we have employees who carry cell phones and we don't want them making changes to the account or being able to buy new phones, etc, so everything has a password above and beyond the social or tax ID number. We don't have credit cards anymore but we bank online, as well as other things and nowadays you can't be too cautious. |
Really!!?? Do these scammers really have soooo much time on their hand?? Omgosh I would have been freaking! So glad your daughter is ok, and even sorrier that this happened to you Shinja! Good Grief! |

I know:( I kept asking why would they do this? That is one of the reasong I was so very afraid Karrie was hurt or something. If I beleive att at all they got the infor (maybe with a radio recorder or something?) hack into my account and used the accounts to make long distance calls. She said the long distance calls are about $2.00 per minute. Quote:
You are soo right:( I don't know why when or how I did not keep the password on that accout. I have had that account for as long as there have been cell phones -- 18 years? I really think the "story" is not over. All of a suden they (att) is offerning me a credit of $300.00 for my trouble :thinking::quizzi::quizzi: Now.. why would they do that if I was scamed from the "outside". The rep that gave me the new sim cards from the store even said it could have been and "inside" job. They knew Karrie was out of the country because she had added international texting (200 ) to her phone. Of course the most important.. she was not hurt and is ok and will be here safe tonight!! |
What a terrible and frustrating ordeal! I'm glad your daughter is safe. This must be the season for fraud. I think I will post a separate thread cautioning everyone because I received 3 scam phone calls this weekend. |
So glad your daughter is safe. You're right, that's all that matters in the big picture. I am skeptical by nature, but then I have not ever had good results with ATT when I have to call them. :(:thumbdown Scammers are out to make money. How would this have been a money making scam? |
That is just creepy and also kinda makes me worried because we travel a LOT.. I can see how they would have got her name and number but the info to get into your account I just do not see how they got that plus how would they have gotten new sims? |
Sorry Shinja you had such a scare. It does sound like something from the "inside" of ATT...which is worrisome. The main thing is your daughter is ok! |
Glad your daughter is safe and sound. How scary |
