A question for those of you who also have big dogs My daughter just got 2 puppies that are collie and shepherd or collie and some kind of spaniel and they are most likely going to be pretty good sized. They are just now 14 weeks old and already come up to my knees! With our smaller dogs we don't have to be so concerned with the cost of good dog food but with big dogs you do. Can any of you recommend a good 'and' affordable dog food that won't break the bank? She is a single, working Mom and she wants to do the right things for them so any help in this area would really be appreciated. She will be shopping at the same pet supply store I go to that is 35 miles away so picking up a quality food isn't an issue but I don't have any idea what food would be good and affordable for larger dogs. |
I have a bigger dog (40 lb) in addition to the 2 yorkies. I used to feed them all Taste of the Wild- Pacific Stream and was very happy with it-but.. due to all the recalls I had to switch to something similar quickly- Earthborn Holistics-Coastal Catch( grain free,no chicken- single protein, probiotics) matched up pretty well , a tiny bit more $ than the TOTW but their poop is just about odorless- that is a good benefit! I buy the 35lb bag and feed so little that I don't think it is that much more expensive than "cheaper" brands in the long run. |
I agree. The higher quality food will fill them up more and longer also. You feed them less. Taste of the wild is a great food. And still is. |
Puppies that will likely grow to 70 or more pounds need to be on a large breed puppy food until 12 - 15 months. Regular puppy food, all life stages food, and adult food are not appropriate. Calcium level followed by calories are the most important issues to consider when trying to prevent orthopedic abnormalities. The puppies should maintain body condition scores of 4 or 5 out of 9. You can read more about this at petdiets.com. There are several companies that make large breed puppy foods. Science Diet has among the fewest caliries per cup andis a good choice. However, if it has to be holistic/natural/what have you, then Iwould Google to find a brandwith this type of product. If the vet is projecting that thry will be <70 pounds my opinion is the same as what I usually say. |
I've tried a bunch of different food for my GSP over the last 7 1/2 years and right now he is on Premium Edge- it's a 4 star food. I pay about $1 per pound after tax. I had him on other foods that were "better" but I think they were too rich for him because he rarely had solid poops. He's doing great on PE. |
