New Laptop recommendations I am seriously thinking about going back to school to become a Family Nurse Practitioner so a new laptop is a must :D I bought my last one in 2002 when I started nursing school and it then crashed 2007/2008 and I never bought a new one since I was done with school. It was something I could easily live without! I use a 1st generation iPad to post here and such- Won in a contest :D My laptop was an HP and before that I had a Gateway desktop. Black Friday is coming up so it I can get a deal on a great new laptop I am all for it. Any recommendations would be great. No bells and whistles required. It would be a glorified typewriter really and research tool. Midlevel should be fine. Would love to keep it under $800. Thanks everyone! |
Laptops everywhere Goggle has a laptop for $250.00 walmart and best buys aboutth e same prices ---shop black friday ads you'll find exactly what you need and easy on the pocket book |
My first recommendation would be a Macbook Pro. There is one that is $1,199. For under $800, Toshiba. I got my Toshiba Satellite series laptop for $399 at Best Buy. I had to buy the Microsoft Office programs separately. This is my second Toshiba laptap. The first lasted 10 years. I need both for business and I love both. The Toshiba is probably tougher. It survived being slammed accidentally to the floor. |
I'd say go for a Mac...but you may want to wait a bit for holiday bargains. MS Ofc is not as expensive as it used to be, but if you have a friend who can "hook you up" then you are ahead of the game. Check out the Lenovo line of products -- they are sleek, easy to use, and not expensive. I won't encourage you one way or the other but I get an employee discount. If you are truly interested after you investigate, send me a PM and I'll give you the info needed for the discount. |
My knowledge base on computers is nothing I would even begin to brag about...actually, quite embarrassing. But I just wanted to say my friend suggested my lap top for me and it has no bells and whistles, and it serves me well for the limited knowledge/use I have. It is a rebuilt Dell business laptop....I dont know the specific name or model number...if you are interested, just tell me where that info is located and I can give it to you. It has continued to work flawlessly for 4 years to date...I got a virus once and had to take it in....I have something going on with .....dont make fun of me...aol, and I have taken it in to get that aol program re-installed..... This lap top only ran me right around $300.00....I thought that was a good price, and I did get a warrenty with it. |
I'm going to suggest a Mac. Mine is 4 years old, and I was going to buy a new one, and instead upgraded my software and memory for about $150 and it runs just like a brand new one. I think they just last a long time and perform well. |
I also agree with getting a mac. Mine lasted over 5 years and was still running pretty well when i decided to get a new one. |
I also vote for MAC:thumbup::thumbup: I went from no apple products to (in 2 years) an Iphone, a Macbook Pro, an Ipod touch and an Ipad :D:D:D |
I agree with a MAC as well but you need to find out if you will have to have any special programs. I know when I was completing my masters there were issues with MAC and some of the required programs. Many programs are geared toward a PC. If you go with a PC, I had good luck with a compaq. Husband bought me a Dell at the end of last year. I have already had problems with it. Speakers have gone out. :( |
Another vote for Mac. You won't regret spending a little more money for how long it will last... |

Another recommendation for a MacBook. Love mine |
Mac if you are comfortable with the interface and applications, otherwise go with windows. I'm particularly fond of Microsoft office. |
This is from 2 of the schools I am really interested in- Not sure it it helps much. It is all a foreign language to me Technology Overview | Vanderbilt University School of Nursing Since dad lives down there already or online The Online Nursing Experience Frequently Asked Questions | Nursing@Georgetown Thanks everyone for the recommendations so far. It is really appreciated! |
Bumping up :) |
With me macs seem to be all about aesthetics. If you're more used to windows I suggest a Sony Vaio. Great computer. I've used Mac and PCs extensively and totally prefer PCs :) |

I just don't think I should need to spend $1,000+ to get a decent computer. I do plan to wait for a sale/deal! |

I will check out all suggestions! |
We have two Dells at home for personal use (a desktop and a laptop) and my work laptop is also a Dell and I believe that all the computers at DH's offices are also Dell. So far, no issues! I have had my personal laptop for about 5 years. My only regret is that it had to come with Windows Vista  Windows 8 is supposed to have more of a mac-type interface I think. I am not sure how I will like it if/when I have to switch! I am stuck with Windows because for home and office I use tons of Microsoft Office. But anyways, DH buys all of his electronic type stuff from Dell and he likes them. He is much more geeky than me. |
Thanks !! :) |

I definitely agree! Toshiba's are fantastic. Before I was able to get a macbook pro I used a Toshiba that cost around $400. It was very sturdy, it was really nice looking, it had a DVD/CD slot, it had a LARGE screen which was very nice quality. Bigger than my macbook pro which is 13" inches. It worked fast. It was the best computer that I had ever owned before the macbook. The macbook is technically a little more convenient to travel with ... but I sometimes wish I still had my Toshiba! My sister however uses my Toshiba now and she travels with it all the time without a problem. I don't remember what specific Toshiba it was called, but if you go into best buy and give them your price range I'm sure they can show you some nice ones! Now that I think about it! I am pretty sure that my Toshiba was from that Satellite series as well. I LOVED that computer =D |
Thanks :) |
