Not working.... not caring!
 

No matter how much I TRY I just can't get into my work anymore. I'm sitting here at work not working and not caring anymore.

Almost 4 weeks ago, an announcement was made that layoffs were coming in the next 4 weeks. That 4 weeks is up on Tuesday. We have all these KEY projects that we are working on, but they are not going to 'go-live' until 2 weeks from now. What if I'm not even here anymore? I can't seem to get into the tedious work I have to do when I don't even know if I'll see my own work come to fruition. :(

Morale is soooooo down here, rumors are flying rampart about when it's going to happen, how it's going to happen, whos getting cut, whats getting cut, what the severance package will be, even so far as to say that the layoff will happen with a 60 day notice and will come out next week, giving us all jobs until early-mid dec and then gone by mid-late Dec. Happy - freakin - Holidays!!! :(

The thing is ... I love my job, I love my company and my coworkers. I know whether I am here or not here things are going to drastically change. I'm half-hearted-ly keeping my eye on jobs in my area, thinking about updating my resume but haven't done anything yet.

Most everyone here at this point is saying they just want it over now. Just to know if they are going to have a job or not. Most people just don't care if it's them thats getting let go at this point, they just WANT TO KNOW!

Hang in there. Thats tough. I had same thing happen in the early 90's. Made it through 4 lay offs to finally get cut and get a HUGE severance package. Still glad I took the package and walked. :) Things will work out. I know its nerve wrecking. Sorry

I am so sorry. I know it's very stressful not knowing. My boss is 85 and I have no idea what will happen to this company when he can no longer handle it, and at 85 it could be any moment, so I know my days could be potentially numbered too. I try to remind myself that no one is guaranteed tomorrow, health could go bad or tragedy could strike so I just take it one day at a time and try very hard not to dwell on it but you're right, it's not easy.

to the OP just curious what type of work you do and what product or services does you company provide. Have any of the layoffs occurred yet, with products on the burner that should be a good sign that they will need people, have you been there long.

I know it is hard but in the long run you are best if you try to still do a good job, who knows maybe you will still have a job and then be further ahead then others, or you could get a job with the client, or some of your co works could freelance for your client. Do you know if the layoffs are based on years in, if not this could be your time to outshine you coworkers.

Cha Cha and 85 year old boss wow that is old, kuddos that he still wants to work at it, may I ask what type of work you do there and does the company employee many other people.

BTW since I am asking you what you do I will tell you my gig. I sell industrial filters for equipment that is used in large industrial plants. I have been doing this for about 15 years, I work directly for the manufacturer of the filters and sell mostly to distributors all over the country. I did this inside an office for a dysfunctional family company for about 5 years, I could no longer take the drama that went on in the company and the family so I approached another small company that did the same thing. They hired me on the spot and I got to work for home, things were pretty good but after about 7 years they started jerking me around, commissions were lowered and vacation time was beinging mandated so I decided I would leave. I also decided I was not going to work for anyone else so I contacted a few companies that did not have much of a sales staff and talked to them about working for commission only. Since all the companies were happy to have a free rep, I wound up being able to choose the company I most wanted to represent. So once my main filter line was in place, I contacted filter companies that sold a different but complimentary type of filter and proposed the same idea to them. So now I am an independent rep selling for 6 companies and make as much money as I did before but answer to no one. I could do much better if I prospected more, but I guess at 57 I feel like winding down a bit. I had several things going for me that made it easier, I have a husband that has a steady income and good benefits, I have a pretty loyal customer base that I knew would follow me, and of course a lot of years experience so I did not need training. What I did was create my own job. I have no idea of your circumstances but you should always be thinking of how to create a job for yourself if one is suddenly pulled out from under you.

I do report application development and data analysis. The people who are getting cut are already picked and have been for awhile. I work for a health care company that develops and markets wellness products. Like quitting smoking software and programs, onsite health coaching with RN nurses, data collection and transformation to report to clients their 'statistics' in their population of customers (people), etc... and the list goes on. We know they are cutting products and we don't know which ones. Executives won't announce the company's vision and long term goals until after the layoff. we just heard it was going to be the biggest layoff since the inception of the company (they have layoffs at least once a year too) which would mean more than 30% of the staff. We don't know the criteria for the layoffs yet and I've only been here 15 months.

When it was first announced I was determined to be noticed for my work. I am the lead developer for one of the companies biggest Key performance indicator projects. So I thought that was a good thing. Then I found out that the people getting let go have already been determined since April. But Ive still busted my butt and been a good/GREAT worker because I CARE. But now its been dragging on too long, people are leaving on their own left & right and we are told it's not going to effect the cuts anyways, also the people around me stopped caring. No one knows if they are going to see their hard work actually go live. They don't know if what they are working on WILL actually go live or will it be a cut product? There is absolutely NO satisfaction in your job right now here. :( Sad way to live.

GOOD for you! :) The thing is, I like my job, love my coworkers sooo much and like the company. I don't want to leave. Its just soooo unstable. :( There are many companies around here that a lot of ex employees here went to. I think I'd be able to find a new job.... I am just not quite ready to give this one up yet! :)

I understand the stress you are going thru ...waiting for the ball to drop.... When I had an "on the job injury, I ended up taking on the Veterans Affairs Hospital and the developing my case all by myself because I could not find a FEDERAL LAWYER to take my case....they are scarse as hens teeth and a "regular lawyer" can not be used! I had NO idea what in the world to do, where to go with my case, how to progress....I was loosing handfuls of hair from shear nerves, and my ecxema broke out all over my body! Fortunately, I was successful in proving my case and I prevailed in the positive outcome....I wanted NOTHING, but to keep my job...was not asking for any financial compensation, just let me come back to work! So I know only too well what the stress of waiting to hear if you still have a job, can do to your mental, emotional, as well as physical well being. I will pray for you, that you are able to continue, unhindered and un-demoralized, in your current position in the company you love. If this door does close on you, I will pray you immediately are propelled into a more satisfying, more financially beneficial, more exciting with more opportunities for advancement, for you and for your future! Try to hang in there and accept this as a challenge to your determination to make your future an even better place to be, whether you are there or elsewhere!

I work for a small independently owned oil/fuel transport company. I do the inventory accounting that's mandated by the EPA for each of our locations and file all the tax reports that go along with it. There are probably 25 employees total. It's a small company and it feels like a family. I was here for 7 years out of college, then quit for 7 years to spend time with my kids, and have now been back for 10 years, and I'm two blocks from home. They've treated me well over the years but, I'm also the youngest one here. That is, the only one not close to retirement, so I know when the time comes, I'll be affected the most by the changes. Yeah, my boss is a very interesting person with a ton of history. He literally grew up on a farm when they only had draft horses to plow their fields. I love to hear him talk about his childhood.

Shelly is their anyone that plans on buying the business from him when he retires, does he have children. I would assume that at his age there must be some talk by him on what the future holds, if this is a profitable business with solid customer base it might be worthwhile looking into buying it. I have seen that happen a lot either one employee or several buy the company they are working for. The man that owns the main company that I rep is in his late 70's and not in the best of health but his daughter is now the "official" owner, he transferred the company to her but he still runs the show, but at least I know it will not fold if he can no longer work.

I can understand how you feel, knowing lay offs are coming. I will say a prayer that you are able to keep your job and stay there.
